Which companies sponsor visas for software QA engineers in Virginia?
Defense and federal IT contractors dominate Virginia's QA hiring, with Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton, SAIC, ManTech, and General Dynamics IT among the most active sponsors. Commercial tech employers including Amazon Web Services (with major operations in Northern Virginia), Capital One, and Neustar also file H-1B petitions for QA engineers. Many of these companies have consistent annual sponsorship histories visible in DOL disclosure data.
Which visa types are most common for software QA engineer roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for software QA engineers in Virginia, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Some candidates already authorized through OPT or STEM OPT transition to H-1B through their Virginia employer. L-1B intracompany transfers are also used by multinational firms operating in the Northern Virginia area.
Which cities in Virginia have the most software QA engineer sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, particularly the cities of Reston, Herndon, McLean, Arlington, and Chantilly, accounts for the large majority of software QA engineer sponsorship activity in the state. This corridor houses the headquarters or major offices of numerous defense contractors and cloud infrastructure firms. Richmond has a smaller but growing tech presence, with QA roles appearing at fintech and healthcare technology companies.
How to find software qa engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse software QA engineer roles in Virginia without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. You can filter by location to focus on Northern Virginia's Dulles Corridor or other Virginia metro areas. This saves significant time compared to manually researching each employer's sponsorship history.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for software QA engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Virginia's concentration of defense and federal contractors introduces a notable consideration: many positions require U.S. security clearances, which are generally not available to non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents. This limits the pool of sponsoring employers compared to states with more commercially focused tech sectors. Candidates should focus on commercial tech companies, cloud infrastructure firms, and non-classified government IT roles in the Northern Virginia area, where sponsorship is more accessible.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software qa engineer jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
