Which companies sponsor visas for physical therapists in Washington DC?
MedStar Health, Children's National Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in DC are among the larger employers with documented histories of sponsoring international physical therapists. Inpatient rehab facilities and outpatient orthopedic clinic networks also sponsor, though smaller private practices rarely have the legal infrastructure to support visa petitions.
Which visa types are most common for physical therapist roles in Washington DC?
The H-1B is the most common route, as physical therapy qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. EB-3 immigrant visa sponsorship is also common in this field given chronic staffing shortages. Some international PTs enter on J-1 exchange programs through clinical training placements, though J-1 work authorization is strictly program-specific and not a direct employment pathway.
How to find physical therapist visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate aggregates physical therapist roles in Washington DC from employers with active visa sponsorship histories, filtering out positions where sponsorship is unlikely. Rather than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship case by case, searching Migrate Mate specifically for DC-based PT roles lets you focus on employers already set up to support H-1B or EB-3 petitions, saving significant time in a competitive market.
Which areas within Washington DC have the most physical therapist sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC is a single-district jurisdiction, so hiring concentrates around major medical corridors: the Georgetown University Medical Center area in Northwest DC, the Capitol Hill cluster near MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and the Children's National campus in the Petworth neighborhood. Federal facilities including the VA Medical Center on Irving Street NW also represent a consistent source of PT openings with sponsorship capacity.
Are there any DC-specific considerations for international physical therapists seeking sponsorship?
International PTs must obtain DC licensure through the DC Board of Physical Therapy, which requires passing the NPTE and verifying foreign credentials through a recognized evaluation service. The DC market skews toward advanced clinical specialties, so PTs with certifications in neurologic, pediatric, or orthopedic rehabilitation are more competitive. The strong presence of teaching hospitals and research institutions also creates openings for PTs interested in clinical education or research roles alongside direct patient care.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physical therapist jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
