Overview
Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment. Gray Systems Lab (GSL) is an applied research lab under Azure Data. We do research and development for databases, big-data, and cloud systems, working in close collaboration with product teams to design innovative solutions for real-world problems. We focus on a variety of exciting areas, including machine learning for systems, reinforcement learning finetuning and post-training techniques, natural language-to-query, agentic workflows, resource management, query optimization and execution. We also work on workload optimization, graph analytics, data storage formats and governance, modern/future hardware (e.g., GPU, NVM and FPGAs), program analysis, and data provenance. Our work covers both internal Microsoft and open-source systems, such as Fabric, Spark, SQL Server, MySQL, Apache Iceberg, and more. We provide opportunities to work on ideas from internal collaborations, as well as external ones with partner universities, and to continue to be an active scholar in the research community. We are looking for highly motivated graduate students who are interested in cutting edge research in close collaboration with advanced industry product groups. Past Research Internships have resulted in a combination of impact on production systems and publications at top conferences.

Which artificial intelligence companies sponsor F-1 CPT visas in Washington?
Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have substantial AI divisions in the Seattle and Redmond area and have historically taken on CPT students for research and engineering roles. Beyond those large employers, Washington also has mid-size AI-focused companies and startups in areas like Seattle's South Lake Union and Bellevue that participate in CPT programs, though sponsorship practices vary by team, budget cycle, and the nature of the specific role.
Which cities in Washington have the most artificial intelligence F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs?
Seattle accounts for the majority of AI CPT opportunities in Washington, particularly in neighborhoods like South Lake Union and Capitol Hill where major tech campuses are concentrated. Redmond and Bellevue on the Eastside are also significant, hosting Microsoft's headquarters and a cluster of AI-adjacent companies. Kirkland has grown as a secondary tech hub. Outside the Puget Sound metro, AI CPT roles are rare.
What types of artificial intelligence roles typically qualify for F-1 CPT sponsorship?
Roles that connect directly to a student's degree program are the qualifying threshold for CPT, not a specific job title. In AI, this typically includes machine learning engineering internships, data science research positions, NLP or computer vision research roles, and AI infrastructure engineering. The position must be integral to or part of the established curriculum at your school, and your DSO determines eligibility based on that academic relationship.
How do I find artificial intelligence F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs in Washington?
Migrate Mate filters AI job listings by CPT sponsorship availability, letting you focus specifically on Washington-based employers who have indicated willingness to work with F-1 CPT students. Rather than sifting through broad postings where sponsorship status is unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces roles matched to your visa type and the AI industry in Washington, saving time during the CPT authorization window when timing is especially important.
Are there any Washington-specific considerations for F-1 CPT sponsorship in artificial intelligence?
Washington has no state income tax, which affects take-home pay comparisons when evaluating CPT offers alongside out-of-state opportunities. The University of Washington's close industry ties with Seattle-area AI employers mean some CPT placements are coordinated through formal university-employer pipelines, so checking with your DSO about established partnerships is worthwhile. Washington's concentration of AI talent also means competition for CPT roles at top employers can be significant.
