Which companies sponsor visas for senior software development engineers in Washington?
Microsoft and Amazon are the dominant sponsors for senior software development engineer roles in Washington, consistently ranking among the top H-1B petitioners nationally. Google, Meta, Salesforce, Boeing, and T-Mobile also sponsor engineers in the state. A number of high-growth startups in the Seattle area file LCAs for senior engineering talent as well, particularly in cloud infrastructure, machine learning, and developer tooling.
Which visa types are most common for senior software development engineer roles in Washington?
The H-1B is by far the most common visa for senior software development engineers in Washington. Because the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, it meets the specialty occupation threshold clearly. L-1B visas are also common for senior engineers transferring within multinational companies, particularly at Microsoft and Amazon. O-1A petitions are filed for engineers with exceptional recognition, such as patents or significant open-source contributions.
Which cities in Washington have the most senior software development engineer sponsorship jobs?
Seattle and Redmond account for the overwhelming majority of senior software development engineer sponsorship jobs in Washington. Redmond is Microsoft's headquarters, and Seattle hosts Amazon's main campus along with major offices for Google, Meta, and Salesforce. Bellevue has grown significantly as a tech hub, with Amazon's second headquarters and several enterprise software companies based there. Kirkland and Bothell have a smaller but active cluster of engineering employers.
How to find senior software development engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Washington?
Migrate Mate filters senior software development engineer jobs in Washington specifically by visa sponsorship willingness, so you're not sorting through listings that won't support international candidates. You can search by city, company size, and seniority level. This is particularly useful in the Seattle metro, where the volume of engineering postings is high but not all employers are set up to sponsor. Migrate Mate surfaces the ones that are.
Are there any Washington-specific considerations for senior software development engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Washington has no state income tax, which affects how employers calculate compensation packages relative to prevailing wage requirements under H-1B rules. The Department of Labor's prevailing wage determinations for senior software development engineers in the Seattle-Bellevue metro reflect one of the highest wage tiers in the country, meaning employers must pay at or above those levels. University pipelines from the University of Washington and Washington State University also feed directly into local sponsoring employers, making academic connections relevant to hiring.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored senior software development engineer jobs in Washington?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
