Which companies sponsor visas for senior software engineers in Washington?
Microsoft and Amazon are the two largest sponsors of senior software engineering roles in Washington, accounting for a significant share of H-1B filings in the state. Google, Meta, Salesforce, and Zillow also have established sponsorship programs in the Seattle area. Beyond the large tech employers, companies like Expedia, Convoy, and Tableau (now part of Salesforce) regularly hire senior engineers with sponsorship.
Which visa types are most common for senior software engineering roles in Washington?
The H-1B is by far the most common visa for senior software engineers in Washington. Software engineering roles consistently qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B rules, given the degree requirements in computer science or related fields. L-1B visas are also used when engineers transfer intracompany, which is common at global employers like Microsoft and Amazon. O-1 visas apply for engineers with exceptional recognition, though they represent a small share of sponsorship cases.
Which cities in Washington have the most senior software engineering sponsorship jobs?
Seattle and its surrounding suburbs, particularly Redmond, Bellevue, and Kirkland, account for the overwhelming majority of senior software engineering sponsorship jobs in Washington. Redmond is home to Microsoft's headquarters, while Amazon's primary campus is in Seattle. Bellevue has grown substantially as a secondary tech hub, with companies like Expedia, T-Mobile, and numerous startups operating there. Outside the Seattle metro, Spokane has a smaller but emerging tech presence.
How to find senior software engineering visa sponsorship jobs in Washington?
Migrate Mate filters senior software engineering jobs specifically to employers who have demonstrated a history of visa sponsorship in Washington, saving you from applying to companies that won't support your immigration needs. You can browse active roles in Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond, filtered to senior-level engineering positions. This is particularly useful given how many job postings in Washington don't explicitly state sponsorship availability upfront.
Are there any Washington-specific considerations for senior software engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Washington has no state income tax, which affects prevailing wage comparisons since federal DOL wage determinations are based on gross compensation. Senior software engineers in Washington are typically mapped to Level III or Level IV wage tiers on Labor Condition Applications, reflecting the seniority of the role. The density of H-1B-dependent employers in the Seattle metro also means some companies face stricter attestation requirements under DOL rules, which can affect how they structure sponsorship offers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored senior software engineering jobs in Washington?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
