How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Accounting Specialist
Target mid-size companies with complex tax obligations
Companies with multi-state operations, international subsidiaries, or regulatory compliance needs frequently sponsor accounting specialists. They understand the value of specialized accounting knowledge for complex financial structures.
Emphasize specialized accounting software expertise
Highlight proficiency in SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks Enterprise, or industry-specific systems. Technical accounting skills combined with software expertise strengthen the specialty occupation argument for visa applications.
Focus on roles requiring CPA eligibility or certification
Positions requiring CPA credentials or eligibility create stronger visa cases. The professional licensing requirement demonstrates the specialized nature of the work and supports H-1B petitions.
Consider public accounting firms during busy season
Large accounting firms often sponsor international talent for tax season and audit work. They have established immigration processes and understand the business need for specialized accounting professionals.
Highlight industry-specific accounting experience
Experience in healthcare billing, construction accounting, or non-profit financial management can differentiate your application. Specialized industry knowledge supports the complexity argument for visa sponsorship.
Apply to companies with recent H-1B filing history
Research employers through DOL disclosure data to identify companies that have previously filed LCAs for accounting positions. This indicates established sponsorship willingness and immigration law familiarity.

Do I need a specific degree for accounting specialist H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, you typically need a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration with accounting concentration, or closely related field. The degree requirement directly supports the H-1B specialty occupation criteria. Some positions accept equivalent experience using the three-to-one rule, but most sponsors prefer relevant degree holders for stronger petition success rates.
What makes accounting specialist roles qualify for visa sponsorship?
Accounting specialist positions qualify because they require specialized knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, financial reporting standards, and accounting principles. The role involves complex analysis, regulatory compliance, and professional judgment that typically requires formal accounting education. This specialization meets H-1B, E-3, and TN visa requirements for professional-level work.
Are accounting specialists eligible for TN visa classification?
Yes, Canadian and Mexican citizens can qualify for TN visas as accountants if they have a bachelor's degree in accounting or related field and will perform accounting duties. The position must involve professional accounting work, not bookkeeping or clerical tasks. TN classification requires the role to match professional accountant responsibilities under NAFTA guidelines.
How competitive are H-1B approvals for accounting specialist positions?
Accounting specialist H-1B petitions generally have strong approval rates when properly documented with degree requirements and job duties. The key is demonstrating that the specific position requires accounting expertise beyond basic bookkeeping. Positions involving tax analysis, financial reporting, or regulatory compliance typically receive favorable adjudication compared to general administrative accounting roles.
Can accounting specialists transition from F-1 OPT to sponsored work visas?
Yes, accounting specialists on OPT can transition to H-1B or other sponsored visas. STEM OPT extension may apply if your degree qualifies, providing additional time to secure sponsorship. Many accounting graduates successfully convert OPT employment to H-1B sponsorship, especially in public accounting firms or companies with established immigration processes during annual filing seasons.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Accounting Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
