Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as an Agile Product Owner
Emphasize your degree-to-role alignment
Visa officers assess whether your degree directly supports the Product Owner role. A background in computer science, information systems, or business with a technical focus strengthens the specialty occupation argument employers need to make on your behalf.
Target companies with active H-1B or E-3 filing histories
Employers who have sponsored Product Owners before understand the process and are far less likely to withdraw an offer due to visa concerns. Prioritizing these companies significantly reduces the risk of a sponsorship conversation falling apart late in the process.
Clarify the technical depth of your role in interviews
USCIS scrutinizes Product Owner petitions more when the role appears generalist. Be specific about cross-functional technical responsibilities, sprint planning, and systems-level decision-making to help your employer build a stronger specialty occupation case.
Ask about the sponsorship process early, not after an offer
Raising the visa question before the final interview stage filters out employers who won't sponsor and saves everyone time. Frame it professionally: ask whether the company has experience sponsoring international hires in product roles.
Understand the LCA and prevailing wage before you negotiate
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your role meets prevailing wage standards. This wage floor is set by location and job level, so understanding it helps you evaluate offers and avoid mismatches that can complicate the sponsorship timeline.
Build a portfolio that demonstrates cross-functional leadership
Hiring managers sponsoring international Product Owners want confidence the investment is justified. A portfolio showing measurable product outcomes, stakeholder management, and Agile delivery makes the sponsorship decision easier and your candidacy harder to pass over.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Agile Product Owner role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases, but the employer's petition needs to clearly establish that the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Roles with heavy technical scope, such as managing engineering backlogs or defining APIs, are more straightforward to approve than generalist product management positions. USCIS has issued RFEs on Product Owner petitions where the job description appeared to accept any degree.
Which visa types are most commonly used to sponsor Agile Product Owner roles?
H-1B visa is the most common path for Product Owner sponsorship, followed by the E-3 visa for Australian nationals and the TN visa for Canadians and Mexicans, provided the role is classified under an eligible USMCA category such as Management Consultant or Computer Systems Analyst. L-1B is also an option if you're transferring within a multinational company in a specialized knowledge capacity.
Does my degree need to be in a specific field to qualify for a Product Owner visa sponsorship?
Not necessarily a single field, but there needs to be a logical connection between your degree and the role. Degrees in computer science, information systems, business administration with a technology focus, or industrial engineering are commonly accepted. A general humanities or unrelated degree makes the specialty occupation argument harder, though relevant work experience and certifications like CSPO or SAFe can support the case.
How can I find Agile Product Owner jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this. It surfaces Product Owner roles from employers with documented sponsorship histories, so you're not wasting applications on companies that will decline when the visa conversation comes up. Filtering by sponsorship willingness before applying saves significant time during a job search that already has tight visa-related deadlines.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B as a Product Owner, and what do I need to watch for?
Yes. H-1B portability lets you start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval, as long as your current H-1B is valid and you haven't accrued unlawful presence. The new employer still needs to file a new Labor Condition Application and I-129 petition. Make sure the new job description still supports a specialty occupation classification to avoid complications.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Agile Product Owner jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
