Assistant Or Associate Professor Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Assistant and associate professor roles are among the most reliable sources of H-1B visa and J-1 visa sponsorship in the U.S. Universities routinely sponsor international faculty through H-1B cap-exempt petitions, meaning no lottery, faster processing, and the ability to file any time of year. Many institutions also support green card sponsorship through the EB-1B or EB-2 NIW pathways.

Target cap-exempt institutions first
Universities, colleges, and affiliated research institutions are exempt from the H-1B annual cap and lottery. This means your employer can file your petition at any point in the year and expect a decision without waiting for April selection results.
Ask about the tenure-track timeline and green card
Institutions hiring for tenure-track positions often initiate EB-1B or PERM-based green card sponsorship within two to five years. Clarifying this timeline during offer negotiations helps you plan your long-term immigration pathway before accepting a role.
Verify your degree field matches the appointment
H-1B approval for faculty requires your terminal degree to align with the academic discipline of the position. A PhD in economics won't support an appointment in biostatistics, even if the research areas overlap. The connection must be direct and defensible.
Request the prevailing wage determination in writing
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your salary meets the prevailing wage for the role and location. Confirming this figure before your start date ensures no compliance issues arise during the petition filing or any future renewal.
Apply to positions that explicitly mention visa sponsorship
Faculty job postings vary significantly in their willingness to sponsor international candidates. Filtering specifically for roles that confirm sponsorship availability saves time and avoids late-stage surprises. Migrate Mate lists academic roles with sponsorship details clearly indicated.

Find Assistant Or Associate Professor JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do universities commonly sponsor H-1B visas for assistant and associate professors?
Yes, universities and four-year colleges are among the most active H-1B sponsors in the country. Because they qualify as cap-exempt institutions, they can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the lottery. USCIS data consistently shows higher approval rates for academic positions than for many private-sector roles, and most research universities have in-house immigration counsel experienced in faculty petitions.
What visa options exist for international faculty beyond the H-1B?
The J-1 exchange visitor visa is widely used for visiting and early-career faculty roles, though it may carry a two-year home residency requirement depending on funding source. The O-1A is an option for faculty with significant publications, awards, or citations demonstrating extraordinary ability. Some Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic disciplines may also be eligible for the TN visa.
Will my foreign PhD be accepted for an H-1B petition in an academic role?
In most cases, yes. USCIS generally recognizes foreign doctoral degrees as equivalent to U.S. degrees for H-1B purposes, provided the degree is from an accredited institution and aligns with the role. A credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization strengthens the petition. The critical factor is that the degree field must directly correspond to the academic discipline of the appointment, not just be at the doctoral level.
Can a university sponsor a green card for an assistant or associate professor?
Yes, and it's more common in academia than in most other industries. The EB-1B category is designed for outstanding professors and researchers and does not require a PERM labor market test, making it faster than standard employment-based green cards. Alternatively, faculty with national importance research may self-petition under EB-2 NIW. Tenure-track appointments significantly strengthen both pathways. Many universities begin the process proactively as part of faculty retention.
Where can I find assistant or associate professor jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates and filters for positions where employers have confirmed willingness to sponsor. Standard academic job boards list thousands of faculty openings but don't surface sponsorship status clearly, which wastes time at the application stage. Browsing Migrate Mate lets you prioritize institutions already set up to support international faculty from the start of the hiring process.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Assistant Or Associate Professor jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
