Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as an English Teacher
Target accredited schools and universities first
Accredited institutions are far more likely to have established visa sponsorship processes. K-12 districts, community colleges, and universities have HR teams experienced with H-1B and J-1 filings, making the process smoother for both parties.
Confirm your degree field matches the role
H-1B eligibility requires a degree in a field directly related to the teaching position. A degree in English, Education, Linguistics, or TESOL typically qualifies. A degree in an unrelated field creates a specialty occupation problem that's hard to overcome.
Ask about state teaching certification requirements upfront
Many public school districts require state licensure before they can sponsor a visa. Clarify whether the employer needs you certified before starting, or whether they'll hire and support certification while you're on status.
Look into J-1 exchange visitor programs
The J-1 Teacher Exchange Program places foreign teachers in U.S. schools for up to five years. It's a legitimate sponsored pathway that bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely, though it comes with a two-year home residency requirement after completion.
Highlight any specialized credentials in your application
TESOL certification, IB teaching authorization, and bilingual endorsements make you a stronger candidate for sponsorship. Employers are more willing to absorb visa costs when a candidate has credentials that are genuinely difficult to find domestically.
Browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Not every school or language program will sponsor visas. Migrate Mate filters for employers actively willing to sponsor, saving you from applying to positions where visa support was never on the table to begin with.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an English Teacher role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but it depends on the employer's requirements. If the position requires a bachelor's degree in English, Education, Linguistics, or a closely related field as a minimum entry requirement, it qualifies. Positions at K-12 schools, universities, and accredited language institutes generally meet this standard. Tutoring or informal teaching roles that accept any degree field typically do not.
Can I get an English Teacher job sponsored without a teaching license?
Yes, in many cases. Private schools, language institutes, corporate training programs, and universities generally don't require state licensure. Public school districts are the main exception and often need state certification before they can proceed with sponsorship. If you're targeting public K-12 positions, research the specific state's requirements before applying.
Is the H-1B the only visa option for English Teachers, or are there alternatives?
The J-1 visa Exchange Visitor Program is a widely used alternative, particularly through the Department of State's Teacher Exchange Program, which places teachers in U.S. schools for up to five years. It skips the H-1B lottery entirely. The O-1A is theoretically available for teachers with extraordinary recognition, but the threshold is very high and rarely applicable to classroom roles.
How can I find English Teacher jobs where the employer is actually willing to sponsor a visa?
Sponsorship willingness is the hardest part of the job search for this role. Many schools post positions without specifying visa support, and you waste time applying to dead ends. Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers open to sponsoring, so you can focus your applications on positions where sponsorship is genuinely on offer.
Does having a TESOL or CELTA certificate improve my chances of visa sponsorship?
It helps but doesn't replace the degree requirement for H-1B purposes. A TESOL or CELTA certificate strengthens your application by demonstrating specialized qualifications, making employers more willing to absorb sponsorship costs. For J-1 programs, these credentials can make you a more competitive candidate in a school's selection process. They're most valuable when paired with a relevant bachelor's degree.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored English Teacher jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
