The University of Texas at El Paso is on the U.S.-Mexico border with Juárez as its sister city. This bi-national and multi-cultural community gives our students a unique perspective on social work. The Department of Social Work is committed to educating culturally responsive practitioners who can serve the border region and beyond.
The UTEP Department of Social Work offers both a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) that prepares students for generalist practice and a Master of Social Work (MSW) that prepares students for advanced practice with a concentration in Social Work in the Border Region.
CSWE identifies Field Education as the signature pedagogy in social work, integrating instruction and socialization where students learn to think, perform, and act ethically within the profession. It is designed to help students build knowledge, develop skills and competencies, and establish a professional identity through the practice of the basic generalist social work methods and techniques learned in the classroom under the guidance, direction, and supervision of agency Field Supervisors.
The BSW Field Education Coordinator can expect to provide leadership in the development, implementation, and oversight of the Undergraduate Field Education Program, including Field Seminar course instruction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the BSW Field Education Program maintains strict compliance with CSWE EPAS accreditation standards, including the verification of the mandatory 460 hours of field experience per student by using the digital platform adopted by the Department of Social Work.
- Work closely with agency supervisors in supporting and guiding students through the field education experience, including problem-solving, conflict resolution, and compliance with CSWE and UTEP standards of professional behavior.
- Work closely with the Field Education Director in developing and delivering orientations for students and community agency supervisors, aligning with the CSWE Social Work Competencies and providing information on the expectations of both students and supervisors.
- Work with the Field Education Director in establishing and vetting community agency partnerships that satisfy the criteria expected by CSWE for generalist social work practice.
- Responsible for administering up to three (3) Field Seminar classes each semester (Spring and Fall). Field Seminar classes are intended to support and guide BSW students integrating the knowledge and skills obtained in their earlier coursework as they navigate their Field Education experience.
- The mission of Field Education is derived from the Department's own statement of purpose, the CSWE standards of accreditation, and the region served by the University.

Target ed-tech companies over public school districts
Private ed-tech companies and curriculum publishers file H-1B petitions far more readily than public K-12 districts, which face budget constraints and bureaucratic hurdles. Focus your applications on companies building educational products and training programs.
Confirm your role qualifies as a specialty occupation
Education Specialist positions must require a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. Roles tied to instructional design, curriculum development, or learning science hold up better than generalist training or classroom-support positions when USCIS scrutinizes the petition.
Prioritize employers with a sponsorship track record
Universities, large ed-tech firms, and nonprofit education organizations have established immigration infrastructure and experience sponsoring work visas. Smaller districts or startups may be willing but lack the legal support needed to file efficiently and correctly.
Align your degree field precisely with the job description
A degree in education, instructional design, or learning and development strengthens your H-1B case significantly. If your degree is in a related field like psychology or communications, gather documentation showing how your coursework maps directly to the Education Specialist role.
Ask about sponsorship timeline before accepting an offer
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per year, with an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your employer understands your work authorization expiry and can submit your petition before the April filing window closes.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers actively sponsoring
Not every Education Specialist posting comes with visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters job listings to show only employers willing to sponsor, saving you from applying to roles where sponsorship was never a realistic option for international candidates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Education Specialist role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but the position must qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning the job normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as education, instructional design, or curriculum development. Generalist roles where any degree is accepted are harder to sponsor. Positions tied to a specialized discipline, such as special education or e-learning development, have a stronger case with USCIS.
What degree do I need to work as an Education Specialist on a work visa?
Most H-1B visa-sponsored Education Specialist roles require a bachelor's degree in education, instructional design, learning and development, or a closely related field. Some employers accept degrees in psychology, communications, or a subject-matter discipline when the role involves subject-specific curriculum work. A degree that clearly aligns with the job description reduces the risk of an H-1B request for evidence from USCIS.
Do public school districts sponsor H-1B visas for Education Specialists?
Some do, but it is uncommon. Public school districts face constrained hiring budgets and often lack in-house immigration counsel, making the H-1B process difficult to navigate. Higher education institutions, nonprofit education organizations, and private ed-tech companies are significantly more likely to sponsor. If district work is your goal, focus on larger urban districts with established HR infrastructure.
What are the chances of H-1B approval for an Education Specialist?
Approval depends heavily on how the position is defined. Roles with a clear degree requirement in a specific field and a detailed job description fare well. USCIS has issued requests for evidence on education roles where the degree requirement appeared flexible, so the employer's petition language matters. Working with an experienced immigration attorney and an employer familiar with sponsorship improves your odds substantially.
Where can I find Education Specialist jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters roles by sponsorship availability, so you are not wasting time applying to positions that will not consider visa candidates. Browse Education Specialist listings on Migrate Mate to identify employers with an active sponsorship track record across ed-tech, higher education, and nonprofit sectors.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Education Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
