Assistant Professor Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Assistant professors are among the most reliably sponsored professionals in the U.S. because every accredited university files cap-exempt H-1B visa year-round for tenure-track faculty with no lottery and no annual cap. Over 30% of tenure-track hires at major research universities are international scholars, and EB-1B outstanding researcher green cards provide an accelerated permanent residency pathway that skips PERM labor certification for assistant professors with strong publication records, while STEM departments in computer science, engineering, and biomedical sciences face the most severe faculty shortages.

Cap-Exempt H-1B Files at Every University Year-Round
Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Johns Hopkins, Berkeley, and all accredited institutions file cap-exempt H-1B for assistant professors with no lottery, no cap, and no filing window. Departments typically initiate the petition as part of the offer letter process.
EB-1B Outstanding Researcher Skips PERM Entirely
Assistant professors with published research, citation records, and peer review activity qualify for EB-1B green cards through their university employer without labor market testing. Processing is significantly faster than EB-2 PERM and can be filed concurrently with H-1B.
STEM Faculty Positions Have the Most Severe Shortages
Computer science, electrical engineering, data science, nursing, and biomedical science departments face the worst hiring gaps, with CS departments at top-50 universities having over 40% international faculty. These disciplines offer the fastest hiring timelines and highest starting salaries.
National Interest Waiver Provides Self-Petition Flexibility
Assistant professors with exceptional research contributions can file NIW independently, providing freedom to change institutions without restarting the green card process. NIW is particularly strong for STEM faculty working in nationally prioritized research areas.
Postdoctoral Experience on J-1 Is the Standard Entry Path
Most international assistant professors complete one to three years of postdoctoral research on J-1 or H-1B before securing tenure-track positions. J-1 waivers through No Objection Statements avoid the two-year home residency requirement.
Business and Law Faculty Also Sponsor at High Compensation
Business schools and law schools sponsor for assistant professors with Ph.D.s or J.D.s and strong publication records. Finance and accounting assistant professors earn $180,000 to $280,000 due to competition with industry for doctoral talent.
