Which universities and colleges in Arizona sponsor visas for assistant professors?
The University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University are the primary sponsors of international assistant professors in the state. Maricopa Community Colleges and Pima Community College also hire international faculty, though at lower volumes. Private institutions like Grand Canyon University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott occasionally sponsor as well, particularly in engineering and aviation-related disciplines.
What visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Arizona?
The H-1B is the most common visa for tenure-track and lecturer positions, as assistant professor roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's degree. Many Arizona universities also use the O-1A for candidates with exceptional research records. J-1 exchange visitor visas appear in postdoctoral-to-faculty transitions but come with a two-year home residency requirement that affects future green card eligibility.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Arizona?
Migrate Mate is a dedicated platform for international job seekers that filters assistant professor openings by sponsorship willingness, so you can focus on Arizona institutions actively hiring international faculty. Searching by role and state on Migrate Mate surfaces positions at ASU, University of Arizona, and smaller colleges that have a documented history of filing H-1B or O-1 petitions for academic hires.
Which cities in Arizona have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Tempe and Phoenix lead due to Arizona State University's multiple campuses and the density of healthcare and research institutions in the metro area. Tucson is the next largest market, anchored by the University of Arizona's flagship research programs. Flagstaff has a smaller but consistent supply of openings through Northern Arizona University, particularly in education, environmental science, and indigenous studies departments.
Are there any Arizona-specific considerations for international assistant professor candidates?
Arizona's research universities participate in the H-1B cap-exempt designation, meaning university employers can file H-1B petitions at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery. This significantly reduces hiring uncertainty for international candidates. Arizona also has growing interdisciplinary programs tied to semiconductor research and sustainability initiatives, which has expanded faculty hiring in engineering and environmental sciences at both ASU and the University of Arizona.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Arizona?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
