Which employers in Ohio most commonly sponsor visas for assistant professors?
The largest sponsors of assistant professor visa petitions in Ohio are research-intensive institutions: The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Ohio University, and Kent State University. Medical schools affiliated with these universities, such as Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center, also sponsor faculty in clinical and research roles. Smaller liberal arts colleges sponsor less frequently but do file petitions for specialized positions.
What visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Ohio?
The H-1B is the most common visa for assistant professors in Ohio, as faculty roles at accredited universities typically qualify as specialty occupations. The O-1A is an option for candidates with strong records of publications, awards, or grants. J-1 Exchange Visitor status is used for visiting faculty and postdoctoral researchers, though it comes with home-residency requirements. Some institutions also sponsor permanent residency through EB-1B or EB-2 NIW pathways for tenured or tenure-track faculty.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate filters assistant professor positions in Ohio specifically by visa sponsorship history, so you're not sorting through postings that don't lead anywhere. Ohio's hiring is concentrated at large public universities on annual academic hiring cycles, with most searches opening between August and December. Using Migrate Mate, you can narrow results to Ohio institutions and review which have active sponsorship patterns for faculty roles.
Which cities in Ohio have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship opportunities?
Columbus has the highest concentration, driven by The Ohio State University and several smaller institutions. Cleveland follows, anchored by Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, and Cleveland Clinic's affiliated academic programs. Athens is significant due to Ohio University's faculty hiring. Cincinnati hosts the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. Bowling Green and Kent have smaller but active hiring programs through their respective state universities.
Are there state-specific considerations for assistant professor visa sponsorship in Ohio?
Ohio's public universities are subject to state budget cycles, which can affect when faculty searches open and how quickly hiring departments can initiate sponsorship paperwork. H-1B cap-exempt status applies to most Ohio universities, meaning they can file petitions year-round without lottery exposure. Candidates in STEM and healthcare-adjacent fields generally see stronger sponsorship activity given Ohio's concentration of research programs and affiliated medical institutions.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Ohio?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
