Which employers in Wisconsin sponsor visas for assistant professors?
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is the largest sponsor of assistant professor visas in the state, followed by UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay, and Marquette University. Smaller institutions like Beloit College and Lawrence University also sponsor international faculty, though less frequently. Research-intensive universities with active grant funding tend to have the most consistent sponsorship activity across departments.
Which visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Wisconsin?
The H-1B is the most common visa for assistant professors in Wisconsin, given that faculty positions qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Many universities also use the J-1 exchange visitor visa for short-term or visiting appointments. Tenure-track roles often lead to employer-sponsored permanent residence through the EB-1B or EB-2 PERM pathways.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin?
Migrate Mate filters assistant professor job listings specifically to employers in Wisconsin who sponsor visas, saving time compared to reviewing individual institution career pages. You can browse open faculty positions across the UW System and private colleges in one place. Filtering by role and state helps identify which departments are actively hiring international candidates for tenure-track and visiting positions.
Which cities in Wisconsin have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Madison is the leading city for assistant professor sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin, driven by UW-Madison's size and research output across medicine, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities. Milwaukee is second, with Marquette University and UW-Milwaukee both hiring international faculty regularly. Green Bay, Oshkosh, and La Crosse each host UW System campuses with periodic faculty openings.
Are there any Wisconsin-specific factors to know when applying for assistant professor positions as an international candidate?
Wisconsin's public universities follow UW System procurement and HR policies, which can affect how quickly institutions initiate H-1B sponsorship after an offer. Faculty in medical and health sciences at UW-Madison benefit from strong grant infrastructure that supports visa fees. Candidates should confirm with each institution's international office whether they cover H-1B filing costs, as policies vary across UW System campuses.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Wisconsin?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
