Which universities and employers sponsor visas for assistant professors in Missouri?
The University of Missouri (with campuses in Columbia, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Rolla), Washington University in St. Louis, and Saint Louis University are among the most active sponsors for assistant professor roles in Missouri. Smaller liberal arts institutions like Truman State University and Missouri State University also sponsor international faculty, particularly for hard-to-fill STEM and specialized humanities positions.
Which visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Missouri?
The H-1B is the most common visa for assistant professors in Missouri, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a master's degree or doctorate. Many universities also use the O-1A for candidates with exceptional academic records. J-1 exchange visitor visas are frequently used for visiting or postdoctoral positions that can transition into tenure-track assistant professor roles.
Which cities in Missouri have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs?
St. Louis and Columbia account for the largest share of assistant professor sponsorship jobs in Missouri. St. Louis benefits from Washington University, Saint Louis University, and several smaller colleges concentrated in the metro area. Columbia is home to the University of Missouri's flagship campus, which is one of the state's largest H-1B filing employers for faculty positions. Kansas City also has a growing academic presence through UMKC and Rockhurst University.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Missouri?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S., including assistant professor roles in Missouri. You can filter by state and job category to surface positions at Missouri universities that have a documented history of sponsoring international faculty. This is more targeted than broad job searches, since sponsorship willingness is already a filter criterion on Migrate Mate.
Are there any Missouri-specific considerations for assistant professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Missouri universities filing H-1B petitions for assistant professors must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the relevant academic field and metropolitan area, which differ between Columbia, St. Louis, and Kansas City. Research-intensive institutions like Washington University in St. Louis often have dedicated international faculty HR teams experienced with the process. Cap-exempt status, which applies to most universities, means H-1B petitions can be filed year-round without lottery participation.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Missouri?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
