Which visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Washington DC?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for assistant professors in Washington DC, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at minimum a master's or doctoral degree. Universities also frequently use the O-1A for candidates with extraordinary academic achievement. Many institutions additionally support J-1 visa exchange visitor status for early-career researchers, though J-1 holders may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement.
Which employers sponsor visas for assistant professors in Washington DC?
Georgetown University, George Washington University, American University, Howard University, and Catholic University of America are among the most active visa sponsors for assistant professors in DC. The Smithsonian Institution sponsors research-track academic appointments, and several DC-based think tanks such as the Brookings Institution hold faculty-equivalent positions that involve sponsorship for international scholars.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate filters assistant professor job listings specifically to employers in Washington DC who have a documented history of visa sponsorship. Rather than sorting through general academic postings, you can search by role and location to surface positions where international candidates are realistically considered. This is particularly useful for narrowing down which DC institutions are actively hiring and open to sponsoring H-1B or O-1 visa petitions.
Which parts of Washington DC have the most assistant professor sponsorship opportunities?
Most assistant professor sponsorship activity in DC is concentrated around the Northwest corridor, where Georgetown, GWU, and American University are located, and along the Georgia Avenue corridor near Howard University. Foggy Bottom and the Capitol Hill area also host research affiliates and policy-focused academic programs. The District functions as a single labor market, so commuting across neighborhoods for these roles is common.
Are there unique considerations for international assistant professors hired in Washington DC?
DC institutions frequently hire for interdisciplinary roles at the intersection of policy, law, and international affairs, which can complicate the specialty occupation determination for H-1B purposes if the degree field and job duties aren't tightly aligned. Many DC universities also have active PERM-based green card pipelines for tenure-track hires. Candidates coming from federal research fellowships or J-1 programs should confirm whether a waiver of the two-year home residency requirement applies before pursuing H-1B sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
