Which employers in Iowa sponsor visas for assistant professor positions?
The University of Iowa and Iowa State University are the most active sponsors, given their size and research output. The University of Northern Iowa, Drake University, Grinnell College, and Coe College also sponsor international faculty, though less frequently. Sponsorship activity at smaller liberal arts colleges depends heavily on departmental need and whether an open position attracts no qualified domestic candidates through a good-faith recruitment process.
What visa types are most common for assistant professor jobs in Iowa?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for assistant professors in Iowa, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a doctoral degree in a specific field. The O-1A is an option for candidates with an established record of scholarly achievement. Many institutions also use the J-1 visa Exchange Visitor visa for postdoctoral researchers or visiting faculty before transitioning to H-1B sponsorship for tenure-track appointments.
Which cities in Iowa have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Iowa City and Ames account for the majority of sponsored assistant professor positions in the state. Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa, a major research institution with a medical college, law school, and graduate programs across dozens of disciplines. Ames hosts Iowa State University, which has particular strength in engineering, agriculture, and the life sciences. Des Moines contributes positions through Drake University and a smaller number of private colleges.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate is a focused job board that filters academic and professional roles by visa sponsorship eligibility, making it straightforward to identify assistant professor openings in Iowa without sorting through positions that do not offer sponsorship. You can filter by state and role to surface active listings at Iowa institutions. Because hiring cycles in academia follow predictable fall and spring patterns, checking Migrate Mate regularly during those windows improves your chances of catching new postings early.
Are there any Iowa-specific considerations for assistant professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Iowa universities filing H-1B petitions must comply with Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the relevant academic rank and discipline, which affects how positions are classified and posted. Institutions with cap-exempt status, such as qualifying nonprofit research organizations affiliated with Iowa's major universities, can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery cap, which is a meaningful advantage for candidates who missed the regular H-1B selection cycle. Faculty positions in STEM fields at Iowa State's land-grant programs also see consistent sponsorship demand.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
