Which employers sponsor visas for assistant professors in Washington?
The University of Washington is the largest sponsor of assistant professor visas in the state, followed by Washington State University, Western Washington University, and Central Washington University. Smaller private institutions like Whitman College and Seattle University also sponsor international faculty, particularly in STEM, social sciences, and professional programs. Sponsorship practices vary by department and available funding.
Which visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Washington?
The H-1B is the most common visa for assistant professors in Washington, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a master's degree. The J-1 exchange visitor visa is also widely used, particularly for postdoctoral-to-faculty transitions. Tenure-track positions frequently lead to EB-1B or EB-2 NIW immigrant visa petitions, which many Washington universities support for permanent residence.
Which cities in Washington have the most assistant professor sponsorship jobs?
Seattle has the highest concentration of assistant professor sponsorship opportunities, driven by the University of Washington and several smaller private colleges. Pullman is significant due to Washington State University, which sponsors international faculty across a wide range of disciplines. Bellingham, Ellensburg, and Cheney also generate openings through Western Washington University, Central Washington University, and Eastern Washington University respectively.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Washington?
Migrate Mate filters assistant professor job listings in Washington specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you're not sorting through positions that won't support international candidates. The platform covers openings across the University of Washington, Washington State University, and other institutions statewide. Filtering by role and state on Migrate Mate significantly narrows your search to employers already prepared to sponsor.
Are there any Washington-specific considerations for assistant professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Washington's concentration of research universities, particularly the University of Washington's strong NIH and NSF grant funding, means many departments have established immigration support processes and work with experienced immigration counsel. Positions tied to externally funded research grants can sometimes move through H-1B filing faster due to institutional familiarity. Public universities in Washington are also cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning positions don't depend on the annual H-1B lottery.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Washington?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
