Which employers in Oregon sponsor visas for assistant professor roles?
The University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Portland State University, and Oregon Health and Science University are among the most active sponsors for assistant professor positions. Smaller institutions like Willamette University and Lewis and Clark College also sponsor on a case-by-case basis. Research-intensive universities with federal grant funding tend to sponsor more consistently, particularly in STEM and health sciences fields.
Which visa types are most common for assistant professors hired in Oregon?
The H-1B is the most commonly used visa for assistant professors in Oregon, as tenure-track and full-time faculty roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's degree or doctorate. The O-1A is an option for candidates with demonstrated extraordinary ability in their field. J-1 visa exchange visitor status is also used, particularly for postdoctoral researchers transitioning into faculty roles, though it carries different conditions.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Oregon?
Migrate Mate filters assistant professor job listings in Oregon specifically to those where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship, saving you the time of researching each institution individually. You can search by discipline, university type, and location within Oregon. This is especially useful when you're targeting tenure-track positions at research universities in Eugene, Corvallis, and Portland.
Which cities in Oregon have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship opportunities?
Corvallis and Eugene are the strongest cities for sponsored assistant professor roles, home to Oregon State University and the University of Oregon respectively. Portland offers additional opportunities through Portland State University, Oregon Health and Science University, and several smaller colleges. These three cities account for the large majority of faculty hiring activity in the state.
Are there any Oregon-specific factors to consider when applying for assistant professor roles as an international candidate?
Oregon's public universities operate under state employment rules that require H-1B petitions to meet Department of Labor prevailing wage standards for faculty positions, which are determined by rank and discipline. Oregon State University and the University of Oregon have dedicated international faculty HR offices that coordinate sponsorship. Candidates in fields tied to Oregon's tech and agricultural research sectors, such as computer science and food science, tend to see stronger hiring demand.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Oregon?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
