Which universities and institutions sponsor visas for assistant professors in Texas?
The University of Texas system, Texas A&M University system, Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Baylor University, and the University of Houston are among the most active sponsors of assistant professor visas in Texas. These research-intensive institutions regularly file H-1B and O-1 petitions for faculty across disciplines, from engineering and life sciences to social sciences and the humanities.
Which visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Texas?
The H-1B is the most common visa for assistant professors in Texas, as faculty positions at research universities typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a doctoral degree. Many institutions are cap-exempt because they qualify as nonprofit research organizations or institutions of higher education, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without being subject to the annual lottery.
Which cities in Texas have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Austin, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio concentrate the majority of assistant professor sponsorship opportunities in Texas. Austin anchors UT Austin and several smaller colleges. Houston hosts Rice University, the University of Houston, and Texas Southern University. The DFW metro includes SMU, UT Dallas, and TCU, while San Antonio is home to UTSA and Trinity University.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Texas?
Migrate Mate is a focused resource for international academics searching for visa-sponsored assistant professor roles in Texas. You can filter jobs by state and role to see active faculty postings at Texas universities that have a documented history of sponsoring work visas. This saves significant time compared to manually reviewing individual university HR portals across the state.
Are there any Texas-specific considerations for assistant professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Texas has a large number of cap-exempt employers among its public university systems, which is a meaningful advantage for international faculty. Because H-1B petitions at these institutions bypass the annual lottery, hiring timelines are more predictable. Texas also has strong doctoral pipelines through its own flagship universities, which means many sponsored assistant professors transition from postdoctoral or graduate researcher roles already held within the state.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Texas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
