Which employers in Utah most commonly sponsor visas for assistant professors?
The University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Weber State University, and Southern Utah University are the primary sponsors of assistant professor positions in Utah. Research-focused departments, particularly in STEM, health sciences, business, and education, generate the most sponsorship activity. Private institutions like BYU have additional hiring considerations tied to their institutional mission.
What visa types are most commonly used for assistant professor roles in Utah?
The H-1B is the most common visa for assistant professors at Utah universities, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a graduate degree. Many universities also use the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa for visiting faculty or early-career scholars. Tenure-track positions frequently lead to employer-sponsored permanent residence through the EB-1B (outstanding researcher) or EB-2 PERM pathways.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Utah?
Migrate Mate filters academic job postings specifically by visa sponsorship willingness, making it easier to identify Utah universities actively hiring international faculty for assistant professor roles. Rather than sorting through general job boards, you can search Migrate Mate by role and state to surface positions at institutions like the University of Utah, Utah State, and Weber State that have a documented history of sponsoring faculty visas.
Which cities in Utah have the most assistant professor sponsorship opportunities?
Salt Lake City is the dominant hub, home to the University of Utah and several smaller colleges. Provo hosts Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, generating consistent faculty hiring. Logan, where Utah State University operates, is the third-largest concentration. Ogden and Cedar City have smaller but active academic hiring markets through Weber State and Southern Utah University respectively.
Are there any state-specific considerations for assistant professors pursuing visa sponsorship in Utah?
Utah's academic hiring market is shaped by a high concentration of faith-affiliated institutions, which may have additional employment criteria beyond standard academic qualifications. The University of Utah's status as an R1 research university means more sponsored positions, especially in engineering and health sciences. International applicants should confirm H-1B cap-exempt status, as most accredited universities qualify, which removes lottery exposure from the process.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Utah?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
