Which universities and institutions sponsor visas for assistant professors in Pennsylvania?
Penn State University, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Drexel University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh are among Pennsylvania's most active visa sponsors for faculty. These institutions regularly file H-1B petitions for assistant professor roles, particularly in engineering, computer science, medicine, and social sciences. Public research universities tend to have dedicated international faculty hiring pipelines and immigration support offices.
Which visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B is the most frequently used visa for assistant professors, as faculty roles at accredited universities typically qualify as specialty occupations. The O-1A is an option for candidates with demonstrated distinction in their field through publications, awards, or peer recognition. J-1 visa exchange visitor visas are also used for visiting scholar and postdoctoral appointments, though they carry a potential two-year home residency requirement.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh account for the majority of assistant professor sponsorship activity in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia's concentration of research universities, including Penn, Temple, and Drexel, drives consistent faculty hiring. Pittsburgh is a growing academic hub anchored by Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, with particular strength in AI, robotics, and health sciences. State College, home to Penn State's main campus, is also a significant hiring market.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find assistant professor roles in Pennsylvania where employers are open to visa sponsorship. You can filter by state and job title to surface relevant faculty postings across Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and other Pennsylvania markets. Because many academic postings don't explicitly state sponsorship availability, using a platform built around sponsorship data saves significant research time.
Are there any Pennsylvania-specific considerations for assistant professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Pennsylvania's high concentration of R1 research universities means many institutions are experienced with H-1B and O-1 sponsorship processes and have in-house immigration counsel. Cap-exempt status is relevant here: universities qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning petitions can be filed at any time of year without entering the annual lottery. Academic hiring cycles typically align with fall semesters, so applications and sponsorship timelines often begin 12 to 18 months before a position's start date.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
