Which employers in Indiana most commonly sponsor visas for assistant professors?
Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame are the most active visa sponsors for assistant professor roles in the state. Smaller institutions like Butler University, Ball State University, and Indiana State University also sponsor foreign national faculty, though less frequently. Large research universities with federal grant funding tend to have established international hiring processes through their HR and global mobility offices.
Which visa types are most commonly used for assistant professor roles in Indiana?
The H-1B is the most common visa for assistant professors in Indiana, as teaching and research faculty roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's degree. The O-1A is an option for candidates with extraordinary ability or achievement in their academic field. Some institutions also use J-1 visa exchange visitor visas for shorter-term faculty appointments, though J-1 status carries a two-year home residency requirement that can affect long-term immigration planning.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Indiana?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters assistant professor openings in Indiana by visa sponsorship availability, saving you from manually screening hundreds of academic postings. You can search by institution type, location, and field. Indiana's university corridor running through Bloomington, West Lafayette, and Indianapolis generates consistent faculty openings, and Migrate Mate surfaces those with confirmed sponsorship so you can focus your applications efficiently.
Which cities in Indiana have the most assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs?
West Lafayette and Bloomington generate the highest volume of assistant professor sponsorship jobs in Indiana, driven by Purdue University and Indiana University respectively. Indianapolis has a growing academic presence through IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) and several private colleges. South Bend is notable for the University of Notre Dame, which hires internationally across disciplines including STEM, humanities, and business.
Are there any Indiana-specific considerations for assistant professors pursuing visa sponsorship?
Indiana's academic hiring is heavily concentrated in STEM, engineering, and health sciences, fields where international candidates are particularly competitive and where institutions have more experience navigating H-1B sponsorship. Research-intensive universities like Purdue and Indiana University often have dedicated international services offices to manage the sponsorship process. Positions tied to federal grants can move on tighter timelines, so understanding your current visa status and work authorization window matters before applying.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Indiana?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
