Which employers in Minnesota sponsor visas for assistant professors?
The University of Minnesota system, including its Twin Cities, Duluth, and Rochester campuses, is the largest sponsor of faculty visas in the state. Other active sponsors include Carleton College, Macalester College, St. Olaf College, and Hamline University. Mayo Clinic also hires academic faculty for its medical education programs and has a track record of supporting H-1B petitions for qualifying roles.
What visa types are most common for assistant professor roles in Minnesota?
H-1B is the most common visa for assistant professors, as faculty positions at accredited universities qualify as specialty occupations. Many institutions also use the O-1A or O-1B for candidates with extraordinary ability or achievement. J-1 visa exchange visitor visas are used for postdoctoral scholars who transition into faculty roles. TN visas apply to Canadian and Mexican citizens in qualifying academic disciplines under USMCA.
Which cities in Minnesota have the most assistant professor sponsorship jobs?
Minneapolis and St. Paul together represent the highest concentration of assistant professor openings, driven by the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and numerous liberal arts colleges in the metro area. Rochester is a secondary hub, particularly for health sciences and medical education roles tied to Mayo Clinic's academic partnerships. Northfield, home to Carleton and St. Olaf colleges, also produces a consistent volume of faculty openings.
How to find assistant professor visa sponsorship jobs in Minnesota?
Migrate Mate aggregates assistant professor positions at Minnesota universities and colleges that have a documented history of sponsoring work visas, filtering out roles where sponsorship is unlikely. You can search by institution type, field, or city to narrow results. Migrate Mate is particularly useful for identifying openings at smaller Minnesota colleges that may not advertise sponsorship support prominently in their postings.
Are there any Minnesota-specific considerations for assistant professor visa sponsorship?
Minnesota institutions filing H-1B petitions for faculty must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the relevant academic discipline and metro area. The University of Minnesota, as a large public employer, is subject to H-1B cap exemption rules, meaning it can file petitions year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. Smaller private colleges may also qualify for cap exemption if they meet the nonprofit or higher education institution criteria under USCIS guidelines.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored assistant professor jobs in Minnesota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
