Map your degree to blockchain SOC codes
USCIS evaluates specialty occupation fit by SOC code. Blockchain Engineer roles typically map to Computer Occupations (15-1299). A degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field strengthens your petition considerably.
Verify prevailing wages before negotiating offers
Run your target role and location through the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify your salary at or above the prevailing wage, so knowing the threshold prevents offer-stage surprises.
Target employers with active LCA filings
DOL LCA disclosure data shows which employers have certified blockchain or distributed systems roles before. Prioritize these companies when applying. Prior filings confirm they understand the E-Verify requirement and prevailing wage certification process.
Distinguish protocol work from general software roles
Recruiters sometimes post blockchain roles under generic software engineer titles. Ask specifically whether the team files LCAs for distributed ledger or smart contract positions. A mislabeled requisition can complicate your specialty occupation argument at the USCIS petition stage.
File your H-1B petition with Migrate Mate
Once you have a job offer, Migrate Mate assigns a dedicated visa expert to handle your H-1B filing, including the LCA coordination with your employer, so nothing falls through between offer acceptance and petition submission.
Use O*NET to build your specialty occupation case
O*NET lists the knowledge areas and education requirements tied to computer and information research occupations. Referencing these in your support letter reinforces that a specific technical degree is standard for your role, not merely preferred.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Blockchain Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Blockchain Engineer roles generally satisfy the USCIS specialty occupation definition because they require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related technical field. The key is documenting that the specific role demands theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, not just general programming skills.
Which visa types can sponsor a Blockchain Engineer?
H-1B is the most common path. Australians can use the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and a separate cap. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify under the TN visa if the role maps to a covered USMCA computer systems analyst category. For exceptional researchers in zero-knowledge proofs or cryptography, the O-1A is also viable.
Do employers find it harder to justify sponsorship for blockchain roles compared to standard software engineering?
It depends on how the role is scoped. Employers occasionally face USCIS Requests for Evidence when a job description lists blockchain alongside broad general software tasks, which can weaken the specialty occupation argument. Petitions that tie the role tightly to distributed ledger architecture, smart contract development, or cryptographic protocol design are less likely to receive an RFE.
Can a three-year bachelor's degree support an H-1B petition for a Blockchain Engineer?
A three-year degree from certain countries, including India and Australia, can satisfy the bachelor's requirement if a credentials evaluator confirms it is equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree. USCIS accepts credential evaluation reports from recognized evaluation services, so having that assessment completed before your employer files the petition avoids delays.
Where can I find employers actively sponsoring Blockchain Engineer roles?
Migrate Mate lets you search and filter visa sponsorship jobs specifically for blockchain and distributed systems roles, surfacing employers with active LCA and H-1B filing history. Focusing on companies with prior LCA certifications for technical roles shortens the sponsorship conversation considerably because those teams already understand the compliance process.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Blockchain Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
