About Mux
Mux is video for developers. Our mission is to democratize video by solving the hard problems developers face when building video: video encoding and streaming (Mux Video), video monitoring (Mux Data), and more. Video is a huge part of people’s lives, and we want to help make it better.
We’re committed to building a healthy team that welcomes diverse backgrounds and experiences. We want people who care about our mission, are ready to grow, believe in our values (from Be Human to Turn Customers Into Fans), and want to improve the people around them.
You’ll join a tight-knit team with experience at places like Google, YouTube, Twitch, Reddit, Zencoder, Fastly, and more. Our founders previously started (and sold) Zencoder, an early leader in cloud video technology, and authored Video.js, the biggest HTML5 video player on the web. We organize Demuxed, the premier conference for video engineers in the world.
We’re backed by top investors like Coatue, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, and Y Combinator. You’ll get to work with amazing companies: hundreds of startups, plus Strava, Patreon, Vimeo, Robinhood, PBS, and Equinox. Customers, large and small, love working with us and love our team.
We are building something big together. We’d love to hear from you!
About the Role
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Platform Engineering Team at Mux, you will lead the design, evolution, and long-term strategy of the infrastructure that powers Mux’s high-traffic, distributed platform. You will operate as a technical leader across teams, shaping architecture, influencing engineering direction, and driving platform investments that enable the company to scale.
Our Platform Engineering team works cross-functionally to ensure that services are scalable, reliable, and easy to operate. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Platform Engineer
Platform Engineering Is One of the Most Sponsored Roles in Tech
Every major technology company employs platform engineers and sponsors H-1B for the role as standard practice. Google, Amazon, Meta, Netflix, Stripe, Uber, and Datadog file thousands of engineering H-1B petitions annually, and platform engineering roles face zero classification risk because they clearly require CS degrees and involve hands-on systems programming.
Kubernetes and Cloud-Native Skills Command a Premium
Deep expertise in Kubernetes, Terraform, service mesh (Istio, Linkerd), and container orchestration at scale is the highest-demand skill set in platform engineering. If you can demonstrate production-scale Kubernetes management across hundreds of nodes, you fill a niche that most domestic candidates cannot. CKA and CKE certifications signal proficiency.
Target Companies Building Internal Developer Platforms
Companies investing in internal developer platforms (Spotify Backstage-style portals, self-service infrastructure, golden paths) are hiring dedicated platform engineering teams and sponsoring aggressively. Spotify, Netflix, Airbnb, DoorDash, and Stripe have publicized their platform investments. Track engineering blog posts to identify companies scaling platform teams.
Open-Source Contributions Strengthen Your O-1 Case
Active contributions to Kubernetes, Terraform, Prometheus, Argo, or other CNCF projects build a public profile that supports O-1 extraordinary ability classification. Maintainer or reviewer status on a widely used project, conference talks at KubeCon or similar events, and technical blog posts create the evidentiary record O-1 requires. This pathway bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely.
Transfer From International Engineering Offices on L-1
Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Uber operate platform engineering teams in London, Dublin, Bangalore, Zurich, and other international offices. L-1B specialized knowledge transfer has no lottery and lets you move on the company's timeline. Build at least one year of platform infrastructure ownership at the international office before pursuing the transfer.
Observability and Reliability Engineering Are the Hottest Niches
Platform engineers specializing in observability (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry), SRE, and chaos engineering are in acute demand. Companies like Datadog, PagerDuty, Chronosphere, and Honeycomb sponsor for these roles specifically because the talent pool with production-scale observability experience is extremely limited domestically.

What is the typical compensation for sponsored Platform Engineer roles in the U.S.?
Mid-level platform engineers earn $150,000 to $210,000 in total compensation. Senior platform engineers at Google, Amazon, Meta, and Netflix earn $220,000 to $320,000 including base, bonus, and equity. Staff platform engineers at these companies earn $320,000 to $430,000. H-1B LCA filings for platform engineering roles show base salaries typically ranging from $140,000 to $220,000. Growth-stage startups pay $130,000 to $190,000 in base with significant equity.
Which visa types do Platform Engineers typically use?
H-1B is the primary pathway with high approval rates because the role clearly requires a computer science or engineering degree. L-1 intracompany transfers are common at multinational tech companies moving infrastructure engineers to U.S. offices. TN visas serve Canadian and Mexican citizens under the Engineer or Computer Systems Analyst categories. O-1 is used for engineers with significant open-source contributions or infrastructure patents. E-3 is available for Australian nationals.
How to find Platform Engineer jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Platform Engineer jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international talent with sponsoring employers. Focus on tech companies, startups, and cloud service providers who frequently sponsor H-1B, O-1, and other work visas for Platform Engineers. These roles are in high demand at companies building scalable infrastructure and DevOps solutions.
What types of companies sponsor Platform Engineers?
Major technology companies are the primary sponsors: Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, Stripe, Airbnb, Uber, and Spotify all sponsor platform engineers routinely. Cloud infrastructure companies like Datadog, HashiCorp, Cloudflare, and Confluent also sponsor heavily. Growth-stage startups building internal developer platforms sponsor after Series B. Fintech companies (Plaid, Brex, Robinhood) and autonomous vehicle companies (Waymo, Cruise) are also active sponsors for infrastructure and platform roles.
What qualifications do Platform Engineer roles require?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field is the baseline. Strong proficiency in Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform or Pulumi, CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD), and at least one major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, Azure) is expected. Programming skills in Go, Python, or Rust are common requirements. Experience with service mesh (Istio, Envoy), observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog), and internal developer platform design differentiates senior candidates.
What is the career progression for a sponsored Platform Engineer?
The typical trajectory moves from platform engineer to senior platform engineer to staff platform engineer to principal engineer or engineering manager. At Google, this maps to L4 through L7 on the engineering ladder. Staff level typically requires 8 to 12 years of experience and demonstrated impact on company-wide infrastructure. Some platform engineers transition into site reliability engineering leadership, infrastructure architecture, or CTO roles at startups. Directors of platform engineering at major companies earn $350,000 to $500,000 in total compensation.
