Document your trade credentials before applying
USCIS and DOL both require evidence of your qualifications. Gather apprenticeship completion certificates, journeyman cards, ASME or AWS welding certifications, and any pressure vessel inspection records before you contact employers.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Refineries, shipbuilders, and industrial contractors that file LCAs regularly are your strongest leads. Cross-reference OFLC disclosure data for SOC code 47-2011 to confirm which employers have sponsored boilermaker roles in the past.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the current Level I through Level IV rates for boilermakers in the specific county where you'll be based.
File your petition on time using Migrate Mate
Once you have a signed offer and a certified LCA, the I-129 petition window opens. Migrate Mate handles the filing paperwork and submits within one business day, reducing the risk of errors that trigger USCIS Requests for Evidence.
Confirm the employer is E-Verify enrolled before accepting
Employers sponsoring boilermakers for H-2B or H-1B status must comply with E-Verify requirements. Ask your prospective employer to confirm active E-Verify enrollment, since non-enrolled employers can't legally complete the I-9 verification step you need to start work.

Find Boilermaker JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can a boilermaker job qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B requires a specialty occupation, meaning the role normally demands at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Most boilermaker positions are classified as skilled trade work under SOC 47-2011 and don't meet that standard. Employers who frame senior boilermaker roles around engineering oversight or pressure system design sometimes qualify, but USCIS scrutinizes these filings closely.
Which visa do most employers use to sponsor boilermakers?
H-2B is the most common pathway for boilermaker sponsorship in the U.S. It covers temporary non-agricultural positions and is capped at 66,000 visas per fiscal year, split across two half-year periods. Employers must demonstrate a temporary or seasonal need and complete a full DOL certification process, including a prevailing wage determination, before filing with USCIS.
Do I need a degree to get visa sponsorship as a boilermaker?
No degree is required for H-2B sponsorship. The DOL and USCIS focus on your ability to perform the work, not on academic credentials. Your apprenticeship completion certificate, journeyman card, relevant welding certifications such as AWS D1.1 or ASME IX, and documented hours in boilermaker trade work are the qualifications employers and USCIS actually evaluate.
How do I find U.S. employers sponsoring boilermakers?
Search for boilermaker roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces positions from employers with documented visa sponsorship history. Industrial contractors, shipyards, refineries, and nuclear facilities are the heaviest hirers. You can also check OFLC LCA disclosure files filtered by SOC code 47-2011 to identify which companies have filed labor condition applications for boilermaker positions in recent years.
What happens to my visa status if the boilermaker job ends early?
H-2B status is tied to the specific employer and the certified period of need. If the job ends before your authorized period expires, USCIS expects you to depart or change status. You have a short grace period, typically ten days after employment ends, to prepare for departure. Staying beyond that without a status change puts you out of status and can affect future visa applications.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Boilermaker jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
