How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a CAD Designer
Target engineering consultancies and architecture firms
These companies regularly sponsor visas for CAD designers since they work on specialized projects requiring technical expertise and understand immigration compliance requirements.
Emphasize your technical software expertise
Highlight proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or industry-specific tools. Specialized software skills help justify the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B petitions.
Focus on roles requiring engineering analysis
Positions involving structural calculations, material specifications, or design validation are more likely to qualify as specialty occupations than basic drafting roles.
Consider manufacturing and aerospace companies
These industries often need CAD designers for complex product development and are experienced with visa sponsorship due to high demand for technical talent.
Highlight your degree field alignment
CAD designer roles typically require degrees in engineering, architecture, or industrial design. Ensure your educational background matches the position's technical requirements clearly.
Apply to government contractors and defense firms
These employers frequently sponsor H-1B visas for technical roles and often have established immigration processes, though security clearance may limit some positions.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What degree do I need for CAD designer visa sponsorship?
Most CAD designer positions require a bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, industrial design, or a closely related technical field. The degree must directly relate to the specific type of CAD work, such as mechanical engineering for product design or civil engineering for infrastructure projects. Some employers accept equivalent experience using the three-for-one rule.
Do CAD designers qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, CAD designers can qualify for TN status under the "Engineer" category if they have an engineering degree and the role involves engineering functions beyond basic drafting. The position must require engineering analysis, calculations, or design decisions rather than just technical drawing or copying existing designs.
What's the difference between CAD designer and CAD drafter for visa purposes?
CAD designers typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship because they create original designs and make engineering decisions requiring specialized knowledge. CAD drafters who primarily convert sketches to technical drawings may not meet the specialty occupation standard. The job duties and required education level determine visa eligibility.
Which industries sponsor CAD designers most frequently?
Architecture firms, engineering consultancies, manufacturing companies, and aerospace contractors sponsor CAD designers most often. These industries rely on specialized design work and understand immigration requirements. Government contractors also sponsor frequently, though some positions may require security clearance limiting international candidates.
Can CAD designers get green cards through their employers?
Yes, CAD designers can pursue permanent residence through EB-2 or EB-3 categories, depending on their education and experience. Positions requiring advanced degrees or exceptional ability may qualify for EB-2. Most CAD designer roles fall under EB-3, which has longer wait times but is more accessible for bachelor's degree holders.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored CAD Designer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
