How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a CAD Technician
Confirm the degree requirement is in the job posting
H-1B approval for CAD Technician roles hinges on the position requiring a specific bachelor's degree. If the posting says 'preferred' rather than 'required,' USCIS may deny the petition on specialty occupation grounds.
Target engineering firms over general contractors
Structural, civil, and mechanical engineering firms are more likely to define CAD Technician roles with specific degree requirements, making H-1B specialty occupation arguments stronger and sponsorship approvals more defensible.
Frame your experience around engineering output, not software use
Sponsorship petitions are stronger when your resume emphasizes engineering analysis and technical deliverables rather than software proficiency. Hiring managers and immigration attorneys both need to justify the degree requirement.
Ask employers about prior CAD sponsorship history during interviews
Employers who have sponsored CAD Technicians before have established LCA templates and attorney relationships. This significantly reduces approval timelines and signals genuine willingness to navigate the process with you.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can a CAD Technician role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but it depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that the position normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field like mechanical or civil engineering. Generic CAD roles that accept any degree or substitute experience for education frequently face requests for evidence or outright denials. Roles with clear engineering degree requirements and complex technical responsibilities have a much stronger approval record.
What visa options are available for CAD Technicians beyond the H-1B?
Canadian and Mexican citizens can pursue TN status under the engineer or scientific technician category, which has no lottery and no annual cap. Australian citizens may qualify for the E-3 visa if the role meets specialty occupation standards. O-1A is an option for technicians with demonstrated extraordinary ability, though this is rare for mid-level CAD roles. Each pathway has different employer filing requirements.
Does my degree field matter for CAD Technician sponsorship?
It matters significantly. A degree in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, architecture, or a directly related technical field strengthens the specialty occupation argument considerably. A general business or unrelated STEM degree makes approval harder because USCIS evaluates whether your specific education is normally required for that position. Employers sponsoring CAD Technicians should document why the role requires a degree in a specific engineering discipline.
How can I find employers willing to sponsor CAD Technician roles?
Migrate Mate lists CAD Technician jobs specifically filtered for visa sponsorship, so you're not wasting time applying to employers who won't file. Engineering firms in infrastructure, aerospace, and manufacturing are the most consistent sponsors. When you connect with a potential employer, ask directly whether they've sponsored this role before and whether they work with an immigration attorney.
Are there common reasons H-1B petitions get denied for CAD Technicians?
The most common denial reason is that USCIS determines the role doesn't meet specialty occupation standards, often because the job description accepts a broad range of degrees or lists experience as an acceptable substitute for education. Weak duty descriptions that emphasize software operation over engineering judgment are another frequent issue. Employers and attorneys can address this by tightening job descriptions to reflect the analytical and technical complexity of the work.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored CAD Technician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
