About Beaumont
With a population of more than 118,000, Beaumont, Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, on the Neches River, about 85 miles east of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. Beaumont has been a home to the oil industry from the days of the Spindletop oil boom until today, and along with nearby Port Arthur and Orange, is part of the Golden Triangle industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast. Those who live and work in Beaumont will find a close-knit community with friendly people and opportunities to explore the area at its many restaurants and businesses, as well as numerous museums and nature parks. Built along the banks of the Neches River in 1903, the original ExxonMobil Beaumont refining facilities have grown into an integrated petrochemical complex on 2,700 acres and have contributed to the economic and social landscape of southeast Texas. In fact, 1 in 7 jobs in Jefferson County are linked to ExxonMobil, making it an integral part of the community. With a workforce of more than 5,500, the Beaumont complex includes a refinery, chemical plant, polyethylene plant and lubricant blending and packaging plant. The complex is part of ExxonMobil’s current building and expansion plans for the U.S. Gulf Coast. Not only does Beaumont produce Mobil 1, the world’s leading synthetic motor oil, it is the only manufacturer of Mobil Aviation Greases. Other products include fuels and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, including plastics, Nylon, shrink wrap and more.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Chemical Process Engineer
Emphasize process design expertise
Highlight experience with process simulation software like Aspen HYSYS, distillation design, and reactor optimization. Employers value engineers who can improve efficiency and reduce operational costs through technical innovation.
Target pharmaceutical and biotech companies
These industries frequently sponsor visas due to specialized knowledge needs. Companies like Pfizer, Moderna, and Genentech regularly file H-1B petitions for chemical engineers with bioprocess experience.
Showcase safety and regulatory knowledge
Experience with OSHA standards, EPA compliance, and hazard analysis (HAZOP) demonstrates critical skills. Many chemical plants require engineers familiar with Process Safety Management regulations for complex manufacturing operations.
Get relevant U.S. certifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license or certifications in Six Sigma, project management strengthen applications. U.S.-recognized credentials show commitment to American engineering standards and professional development.
Consider oil and gas companies
Refineries and petrochemical plants like ExxonMobil and Chevron sponsor chemical engineers for process optimization roles. These companies often need specialists in distillation, catalysis, and heat exchanger design.
Apply through campus recruiting
Many major chemical companies recruit directly from engineering schools for entry-level process engineer positions. These structured programs often include visa sponsorship for qualified international graduates with relevant degrees.

What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a chemical process engineer?
You need a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, or closely related field like materials science or petroleum engineering. Some employers accept mechanical engineering with significant chemical process experience. Three years of relevant work experience can substitute for one year of missing education under the equivalency rule.
Do chemical process engineers get approved for H-1B visas?
Yes, chemical process engineering has strong approval rates because it clearly qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring specific technical knowledge. The role involves complex calculations, safety analysis, and process optimization that directly relate to engineering degree coursework, making USCIS approval likely when properly documented.
Which companies sponsor chemical process engineers for work visas?
Major sponsors include pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson), chemical manufacturers (Dow, DuPont), oil refineries (ExxonMobil, Shell), and engineering consultancies (Jacobs, Fluor). Many mid-size specialty chemical companies also sponsor, particularly those with complex manufacturing processes requiring specialized expertise.
Can I get TN visa sponsorship as a chemical process engineer?
Yes, if you're Canadian or Mexican. Chemical process engineering falls under the TN "Engineer" category, which requires a bachelor's degree in engineering and work directly related to your field. The role must involve engineering functions like process design, optimization, or safety analysis rather than routine operations.
What if my chemical engineering degree is from outside the U.S.?
Foreign degrees are acceptable if they're equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. You'll need a credential evaluation from an approved agency like WES or ECE. Three-year degrees may require additional coursework or work experience to meet equivalency requirements for specialty occupation standards.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Chemical Process Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
