How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Coding Specialist
Target employers already filing LCAs
Companies that have previously filed Labor Condition Applications for Coding Specialist roles are far more likely to sponsor again. Prior filings signal an established sponsorship process, reducing friction when you raise the topic during interviews.
Clarify which coding domain you work in
Medical coding and software coding attract different employers and visa pathways. Be explicit on your resume and in applications whether your specialty is ICD-10 clinical coding, CPT billing, or programming-based development work. Ambiguity delays sponsorship decisions.
Lead with your degree field, not just your title
H-1B specialty occupation approval depends heavily on your degree matching the role. Health information management, computer science, or a related technical field strengthens your petition significantly compared to a general business or unrelated degree.
Get your credentials evaluated early
If you completed your degree outside the United States, obtain a credential evaluation from a recognized service before applying. Many employers stall sponsorship decisions when foreign credentials are unclear, so removing that uncertainty speeds up the process considerably.
Ask about cap-exempt employers
Hospitals, nonprofit research institutions, and university-affiliated health systems may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning you can start without waiting for the annual lottery. Coding Specialist roles inside these organizations are worth prioritizing if you need faster work authorization.
Highlight certifications alongside your degree
Credentials such as CPC, CCS, or RHIA reinforce that your role is a specialty occupation requiring specialized knowledge. USCIS adjudicators respond well to industry certifications that demonstrate the position demands more than general skills or broad training.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can a Coding Specialist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, but the determination is position-specific. USCIS requires that the role normally demands a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as health information management, computer science, or a directly related discipline. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field, or that primarily rely on on-the-job training, face higher denial risk. A well-drafted job description that ties the degree requirement to the actual duties strengthens the petition considerably.
Do employers commonly sponsor Coding Specialists for visas?
Sponsorship is more common in healthcare IT and large hospital systems than in smaller medical billing firms. Employers who regularly hire for ICD-10, CPT, or HCC coding at scale tend to have existing immigration infrastructure. You can browse Coding Specialist roles with confirmed sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers so you're not guessing at each company's willingness.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a Coding Specialist?
A bachelor's degree in health information management, health informatics, computer science, or a closely related technical field is the standard requirement. Three years of qualifying work experience can substitute for one year of formal education if your degree doesn't fully align. Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees. What matters most is that the degree field connects directly to the specific duties of the coding role.
Is the O-1 visa a realistic option for an experienced Coding Specialist?
It can be, but the bar is high. The O-1 requires demonstrating extraordinary ability through evidence such as published work, nationally recognized awards, a high salary relative to peers, or critical contributions to a distinguished organization. Most Coding Specialists pursue the H-1B instead. The O-1 becomes more viable if you've led significant projects, been recognized through industry organizations like AHIMA, or hold a senior role with documented national impact.
How does working for a cap-exempt employer affect my H-1B options as a Coding Specialist?
Cap-exempt employers, including qualifying nonprofit hospitals, university health systems, and research institutions, can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery. This means you can start working as soon as USCIS approves the petition rather than waiting for an October 1 start date. For Coding Specialists, this is a meaningful advantage because healthcare institutions frequently qualify. Confirm cap-exempt status directly with the employer's HR or legal team before factoring it into your timeline.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Coding Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
