How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Convention Services Manager
Target large hotel chains and convention centers
Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and major convention centers regularly sponsor H-1B visas for management roles. Large venues have established immigration processes and higher sponsorship success rates.
Emphasize specialized event technology experience
Highlight experience with event management software, AV systems, and venue technology platforms. Technical expertise strengthens the specialty occupation requirement for visa approval.
Focus on corporate and association clients
Positions managing corporate meetings and association conferences typically require higher-level planning skills, making the H-1B specialty occupation case stronger than basic event coordination roles.
Get certified in event management
CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) or other industry certifications demonstrate specialized knowledge and can strengthen your H-1B petition by showing professional expertise beyond general business skills.
Apply during off-peak hiring seasons
Convention services hiring often peaks before major conference seasons. Applying during slower periods may give you more time to discuss visa sponsorship with potential employers.
Consider destination management companies
DMCs that handle international corporate events often have experience with visa sponsorship and value multilingual skills and cross-cultural event planning expertise from international candidates.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a Convention Services Manager?
Most positions require a bachelor's degree in hospitality management, business administration, marketing, or communications. Some employers accept event management, tourism, or related fields. The key is demonstrating how your degree relates to specialized event planning and client management responsibilities required for the role.
Do Convention Services Manager roles qualify for H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
Yes, when the position requires specialized knowledge of event planning, vendor coordination, contract negotiation, and hospitality operations. Roles involving complex meeting logistics, budget management, and client relationship management typically meet specialty occupation standards. Basic event setup positions may not qualify.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor Convention Services Managers?
Large hotel chains, major convention centers, destination management companies, and corporate event firms have the highest sponsorship rates. These employers often handle international clients and understand the value of diverse cultural perspectives in event planning and client service.
Can I get an H-1B if my experience is in general hospitality rather than events?
Possibly, if you can demonstrate transferable skills in client management, vendor coordination, and project planning. However, specific event management experience strengthens your case. Consider highlighting any meeting coordination, group bookings, or special event responsibilities from previous hospitality roles.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Convention Services Manager applications?
Convention services positions compete in the regular H-1B cap with approximately 25% selection odds. However, if you work for a nonprofit convention center, university venue, or research institution, you may qualify for cap-exempt filing, avoiding the lottery entirely.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Convention Services Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
