ABOUT THE JOB
Our thirst for technology is a part of everything we do. The Data Center Engineering team takes the physical design of our data centers into the future. Our lab mirrors a research and development department - cutting-edge strategies are born, tested and tested again. Along with a team of great minds, you take on complex topics like how we use power or how to run state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly facilities. You're a visionary who optimizes for efficiencies and never stops seeking improvements - even small changes that can make a huge impact. You generate ideas, communicate recommendations to senior-level executives and drive implementation alongside facilities technicians.
With your technical expertise, you ensure compliance with codes and standards, develop infrastructure improvements and serve as an expert in your specialty (e.g., cooling, electrical).
As the Data Center Electrical Engineer you will be involved in the development of complex electrical infrastructure from site assessments and concept design to greenfield construction and major modifications of existing infrastructures on global capital projects. You will prepare documentation including Statements of Work (SOW), Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis, concept designs, drawing markups, budgets, schedules, factory test documents, final commissioning reports, and the review of as-builts and submittals.
Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Data Center Engineer
Target large cloud and colocation operators first
Companies like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google operate data centers at scale and have established immigration teams. They file H-1B petitions regularly and are far more comfortable with sponsorship than smaller operators.
Frame your degree as specialty-occupation evidence
USCIS scrutinizes data center roles for specialty occupation eligibility. Lead with your electrical or computer engineering degree. If your degree is in a adjacent field, document how it directly applies to the systems you'll be maintaining and designing.
Get your certifications in order before applying
BICSI RCDD, CDCP, or vendor certifications from Cisco and Juniper signal technical depth to employers. They also strengthen your H-1B petition by reinforcing that the role requires specialized knowledge beyond general IT support.
Distinguish yourself from general IT support candidates
Sponsoring employers need to justify that the role requires a degree. Emphasize infrastructure design, power and cooling systems, and network architecture experience. Avoid framing your work as helpdesk or generalist IT, even if your experience overlaps.
Ask about cap-exempt employers during your search
Universities, nonprofits, and government-affiliated research facilities are exempt from the H-1B lottery cap. Data centers operated by or affiliated with these entities can file year-round, which significantly improves your odds of receiving sponsorship.
Browse Migrate Mate for roles that explicitly sponsor visas
Most job boards don't filter by sponsorship availability. Migrate Mate surfaces data center engineer roles where employers have confirmed they sponsor work visas, saving you the time of applying to positions that will reject you at the offer stage.

Find Data Center Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a data center engineer role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, data center engineer roles generally qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B rules when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field. Roles focused on infrastructure design, power systems, or network architecture are the strongest fits. Generic operations or technician roles that don't require a degree can be harder to sponsor.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my data center engineer visa?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or information technology. The degree field matters, USCIS looks for a direct relationship between what you studied and what the role requires. A degree in an unrelated field combined with certifications like BICSI RCDD may still support a petition if the employer can document the connection.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for data center engineers compared to software roles?
Data center engineering roles face similar H-1B lottery odds as any cap-subject petition, but there's a practical advantage: fewer candidates are competing for these positions compared to software engineering. Employers in this space also tend to have smaller applicant pools, which can make them more willing to invest in sponsorship for a strong candidate.
Can I get sponsored as a data center engineer if I'm on OPT or STEM OPT?
Yes. Many employers will hire data center engineers on OPT and file an H-1B petition during the April cap season. If you have a STEM-eligible degree in engineering or computer science, your 24-month STEM OPT extension gives you additional runway. Use Migrate Mate to find employers who are already comfortable with this transition and have sponsored OPT candidates before.
Are there data center engineer jobs that don't require winning the H-1B lottery?
Yes, in two scenarios. First, cap-exempt employers, universities, nonprofits, and certain research institutions, can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery exposure. Second, Australian citizens can pursue E-3 visa sponsorship, which has no lottery and a 10,500 annual cap that has never been fully used. Both paths are worth exploring before assuming the lottery is your only option.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Data Center Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
