F-1 CPT Sponsorship Jobs
If you're an F-1 student looking to gain work experience before graduation, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) lets you work off-campus in a role directly tied to your degree program. CPT is authorized by your school's Designated School Official before work begins, with no petition or cost to the employer. One important limit: using 12 or more months of full-time CPT makes you ineligible for OPT, so most students use CPT part-time or keep full-time use under that threshold.

How to Get F-1 CPT Sponsorship
Start your CPT job search at least one semester early
CPT requires a job offer before your school authorizes work. Most employers need 4 to 8 weeks to extend an offer, and your DSO needs time to process authorization. Starting early prevents losing opportunities to paperwork delays.
Target employers with established internship programs
Large tech, consulting, and finance firms run structured internship programs specifically designed to onboard F-1 students. These employers already understand CPT authorization and won't treat the paperwork as an obstacle.
Your CPT must directly relate to your degree program
Your DSO will only authorize CPT for work that aligns with your declared major. A computer science student can't use CPT for a marketing role. Confirm the connection between the job description and your curriculum before applying.
Use your university's career center to find CPT-friendly employers
University career centers maintain lists of employers who have previously hired F-1 CPT students. These employers are familiar with the process, reducing the risk they'll withdraw an offer after learning work authorization is involved.
Protect your OPT by using CPT strategically
Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most students limit full-time CPT to stay under that threshold, preserving post-graduation work authorization. Track your cumulative CPT hours carefully.
Be upfront about CPT requirements early in the interview process
Some employers confuse CPT with H-1B sponsorship and assume it's expensive or complex. Clarifying that CPT costs the employer nothing and requires only a signed offer letter removes hesitation before it derails an offer.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between CPT and OPT?
CPT is used while you are still enrolled in your degree program and must be directly tied to your curriculum, such as an internship course or required practicum. OPT is used after completing your degree and provides more flexibility in the type of work you can do. Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility, so most students use CPT part-time or limit full-time use to less than a year.
How do employers hire students on CPT?
Employers do not file any petition or pay any fees to hire a CPT student. The student's university authorizes CPT and issues an updated I-20 listing the employer. The employer verifies the I-20 and Employment Authorization Document. There is no E-Verify requirement for CPT, making it one of the simplest ways for companies to hire international students for internships and co-ops.
What types of jobs qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT must be integral to the student's curriculum or required by the degree program. Internships tied to a credited internship course, cooperative education placements, practicums, and clinical rotations are common qualifying situations. The job must be in a field directly related to the student's major. Employers offering unrelated work or volunteer roles typically do not qualify for CPT authorization.
Can a student do CPT at multiple employers?
Yes, a student can be authorized for CPT at more than one employer simultaneously, as long as each placement is separately authorized by the DSO and each qualifies as an integral part of the curriculum. Each employer must be listed on the student's I-20. Part-time CPT at multiple employers is a common arrangement for students balancing coursework with practical experience requirements.
How do I find CPT internship opportunities?
Migrate Mate surfaces jobs that include F-1 CPT sponsorship, making it easier to find internships and co-op positions at employers comfortable with student work authorization. Focus on companies that regularly participate in university recruiting programs, as they typically have established processes for onboarding CPT students. Reaching out to university career centers can also connect you with employers who have sponsored CPT in the past.
Can I do CPT while taking online classes or studying remotely?
It depends on your school's policy and SEVP guidance. Generally, CPT requires active enrollment in a program where the practical training is an integral part of the curriculum. Some schools allow CPT while enrolled in hybrid or partially online programs, but fully online enrollment during CPT may not satisfy the curricular requirement. Check with your school's Designated School Official for their specific policy, as rules can vary between institutions.
