Target biotech and diagnostics companies first
Companies like Illumina, Thermo Fisher, and Bio-Rad have established immigration programs and sponsor Field Application Scientists regularly. Larger employers process H-1B petitions in volume, which often means faster internal approvals and dedicated HR support for visa filings.
Confirm your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the job. A degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering typically satisfies the specialty occupation standard for this role. A general science degree may require additional documentation.
Negotiate sponsorship terms before accepting an offer
Some employers cover H-1B filing fees; others pass costs to the employee. Clarify who pays premium processing, attorney fees, and future green card sponsorship before signing. These details are easier to negotiate before you accept than after.
Australian citizens should ask about the E-3 visa
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens and is significantly easier to obtain than the H-1B. There is no lottery, no annual cap pressure, and applications can be processed at an Australian U.S. consulate within weeks of receiving a job offer.
Document your technical expertise thoroughly
For H-1B or O-1 petitions, USCIS scrutinizes whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Field application work involving complex instrumentation, assay development, or clinical diagnostics strengthens this case. Collect letters, publications, and product certifications in advance.
Browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Not every company that posts a Field Application Scientist role will sponsor visas. Migrate Mate filters job listings to show only employers actively open to sponsoring international candidates, saving you from applying to roles that will reject you at the offer stage.

Find Field Application Scientist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Application Scientist role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Field Application Scientists generally qualify as a specialty occupation under H-1B requirements because the role typically demands at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific scientific field such as molecular biology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering. USCIS looks for a direct connection between the degree field and job duties, so roles that involve complex instrumentation, assay support, or scientific troubleshooting at an advanced level tend to hold up well during adjudication.
What degree do I need to get sponsored as a Field Application Scientist?
A bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant life sciences or engineering discipline is the standard requirement. Molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, biomedical engineering, and related fields are the strongest fits. A general biology or interdisciplinary degree may still qualify, but your employer's immigration attorney will likely need to document the connection between your coursework and the specific technical duties in the role more carefully.
Are Field Application Scientist roles hard to get sponsored for compared to software jobs?
Sponsorship availability is narrower than in software, but biotech and diagnostics employers sponsor this role at meaningful rates. Companies with large commercial science teams, such as those selling sequencing platforms, laboratory analyzers, or reagent systems, regularly hire internationally. The H-1B lottery remains the main obstacle, though Australian citizens can sidestep it entirely with the E-3 visa. You can find employers actively sponsoring this role on Migrate Mate.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B as a Field Application Scientist?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to move to a new employer once your transfer petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as you have been in valid H-1B status for at least 180 days. Your new employer files a fresh I-129 petition. Because Field Application Scientist duties and degree requirements are consistent across companies, transfers within the same industry are straightforward from an immigration standpoint.
Do Field Application Scientists have a path to a green card through their employer?
Yes, most employer-sponsored green card paths for this role go through the EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based categories, which require the employer to complete PERM labor certification first. The process typically takes two to four years before a priority date becomes current, longer for Indian and Chinese nationals due to visa backlogs. Some employers with strong immigration programs will initiate the green card process after one to two years in the role, so it is worth asking about this explicitly during negotiations.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Field Application Scientist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
