How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a General Ledger Accountant
Target employers with dedicated accounting functions
Large corporations, healthcare systems, and manufacturing companies maintain in-house accounting teams and sponsor visas far more consistently than small businesses. These employers have established HR and legal infrastructure to support H-1B and TN petitions without friction.
Confirm your degree field matches the role
H-1B specialty occupation requires a directly related degree. Accounting, finance, or business with an accounting concentration all qualify. A general business administration degree without clear accounting coursework can complicate the petition and invite USCIS scrutiny.
Leverage TN status if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Accountants qualify under the TN visa category, which bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. Canadian citizens can obtain TN status at the border. This is a faster, lower-cost path that many accounting candidates overlook when pursuing U.S. employment.
Pursue CPA licensure or progress toward it
A CPA designation or documented exam progress signals professional credentialing that strengthens your H-1B petition. USCIS views licensed accountants more favorably when assessing specialty occupation status, and employers prefer candidates who reduce petition risk for them.
Understand that the LCA wage tier matters
Employers must certify a prevailing wage on your Labor Condition Application before sponsoring an H-1B. For General Ledger Accountants, the certified wage tier directly affects what the employer commits to paying, so target roles where your experience justifies a higher wage level.
Browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Not every accounting job listing includes visa sponsorship details upfront. Migrate Mate filters specifically for roles where employers have a verified history of sponsoring work visas, saving you from applying to positions that will reject you at the offer stage.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a General Ledger Accountant role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, General Ledger Accountant consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation under H-1B standards. USCIS requires the position to normally require a bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, finance, or a directly related field. Most corporate accounting roles meet this threshold, particularly when the job description references specific technical requirements like GAAP compliance, reconciliations, or ERP system management.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor me as a General Ledger Accountant?
A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field is the standard requirement. A general business degree may qualify if your transcript shows substantial accounting coursework. International degrees are accepted, including three-year bachelor's degrees from Australian and Indian universities, though the employer's immigration attorney will typically evaluate equivalency before filing.
Which visa types commonly sponsor General Ledger Accountant roles?
H-1B is the most common path for most nationalities. Canadian and Mexican citizens qualify for TN visa status under the accountant category, which skips the lottery entirely. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, also lottery-free. All three require the employer to file paperwork confirming the role is a specialty occupation and that wages meet prevailing wage standards.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for accounting roles compared to tech jobs?
Accounting roles face the same 85,000-slot lottery cap as all H-1B petitions, but they are submitted in lower volume than software engineering roles, so the competitive dynamic is similar. The bigger variable is finding employers willing to sponsor. Many mid-size accounting departments avoid H-1B due to cost and complexity. Use Migrate Mate to find employers with a documented sponsorship track record specifically for accounting positions.
Does having a CPA license improve my chances of getting visa sponsorship?
Yes, meaningfully. CPA licensure strengthens the specialty occupation argument in an H-1B petition because it demonstrates that the role requires professional credentialing beyond a generic degree. Employers also prefer sponsored candidates who reduce legal risk. If you have passed CPA exam sections but are not yet licensed, documenting your progress in your application still signals commitment and adds supporting context.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored General Ledger Accountant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
