Target companies with established sponsorship track records
Employers who have sponsored H-1B visas before have internal processes in place, making approval smoother and faster. Mid-size tech and healthcare companies often sponsor operations leadership roles more readily than early-stage startups.
Emphasize your degree's direct relevance to the role
USCIS requires a specific degree-to-job match for H-1B specialty occupation status. A degree in business administration, operations management, or industrial engineering maps cleanly to this title and strengthens your petition considerably.
Quantify your operational impact in every application
Sponsoring employers need to justify the hire to USCIS. Concrete metrics, cost reductions, efficiency gains, team growth managed, demonstrate the specialized value you bring and give your employer a stronger case for sponsorship.
Understand that general management roles face more USCIS scrutiny
Operations leadership titles can attract requests for evidence if the job duties appear broadly managerial. Ensure your role description details specialized functions like process optimization, systems architecture, or vendor contract management rather than general oversight.
Start the sponsorship conversation during or after the offer stage
Raising visa needs too early can create hesitation. Once an employer signals strong interest or extends an offer, that's the right moment to confirm they can sponsor and confirm the timeline for Labor Condition Application filing.
Browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Not every company that posts operations leadership jobs will sponsor visas. Migrate Mate filters for employers with active sponsorship history, saving you from applying to roles where visa support is unlikely from the outset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Head of Business Operations role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
It can, but it depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that a bachelor's degree in a specific field be the normal minimum for the position. Roles focused on process engineering, systems optimization, or financial operations analysis qualify more consistently than broadly defined general management titles. Your employer's job description needs to emphasize the specialized, degree-required nature of the work.
What degree does an employer typically require to sponsor this role?
Most employers sponsoring Head of Business Operations roles require a bachelor's degree in business administration, operations management, industrial engineering, finance, or a closely related field. A general degree in an unrelated discipline weakens the specialty occupation argument. A master's degree in business or operations can strengthen both your petition and your competitiveness for senior-level openings.
How do I find employers who will actually sponsor a Head of Business Operations visa?
Sponsorship willingness varies significantly by company size and industry. Migrate Mate lists Head of Business Operations jobs from employers with verified sponsorship histories, so you're not guessing which postings are viable. Focusing your search there avoids wasted applications to companies that don't have the infrastructure or willingness to file an H-1B visa petition for an operations leadership hire.
What increases the risk of an H-1B RFE for this job title?
USCIS frequently issues Requests for Evidence for operations roles that appear broadly managerial rather than requiring a specific degree. Risk increases if the job description includes language like 'oversee daily operations' without specifying the technical or specialized function involved. Employers can mitigate this by detailing the specialized duties, the specific educational background required, and how the role differs from general administration.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a Head of Business Operations role at a new company?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to change employers while maintaining valid status, provided your new employer files a transfer petition before your current authorized stay expires. The new role must also qualify as a specialty occupation. Operations leadership positions at companies with prior H-1B sponsorship experience tend to process transfers more efficiently, since the employer already understands the LCA and I-129 filing requirements.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Head Of Business Operations jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
