How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an IT Operations Manager
Target employers with existing H-1B filing history
Large enterprises and managed service providers file H-1B petitions regularly for IT Operations roles. Companies with established immigration programs move faster and face fewer internal approval hurdles than those sponsoring for the first time.
Clarify the specialty occupation requirement upfront
USCIS requires the role to mandate a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. IT Operations Manager positions that require computer science, information systems, or engineering are well-positioned. Generalist management roles with no field requirement can face RFEs.
Document your supervisory scope for L-1A eligibility
If you're transferring within a multinational company, L-1A may be faster than H-1B with no lottery risk. You'll need to demonstrate you managed professional-level employees, not just oversaw processes or systems, at your home-country office.
Register for the H-1B lottery in March even before you have an offer
Employers can submit H-1B registrations before a formal offer is finalized. Starting conversations with IT employers in January and February gives you the best chance of being registered before the March window closes.
Highlight infrastructure ownership, not just coordination
USCIS scrutinizes IT Operations Manager petitions where the role looks like project coordination. Petitions that emphasize direct ownership of enterprise systems, SLA accountability, and technical architecture decisions are harder to challenge as non-specialty occupations.
Ask whether the employer uses an in-house immigration team or outside counsel
Employers with dedicated immigration counsel typically handle H-1B petitions more efficiently and with fewer errors. This distinction matters for timeline accuracy and your ability to get straight answers about sponsorship during the hiring process.

Does an IT Operations Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
It depends on how the position is defined. If the job description requires a bachelor's degree specifically in computer science, information systems, or a related technical field, it generally qualifies. Roles where any bachelor's degree is acceptable, or where the technical requirements are vague, are more vulnerable to USCIS requests for evidence challenging specialty occupation status.
Which visa is better for IT Operations Managers: H-1B or L-1A?
L-1A is often the stronger path if you're already working for a multinational employer abroad, because it bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. It requires at least one year of managerial or executive experience within the same company in the past three years. H-1B is the standard route for candidates without an existing employer relationship in the U.S.
Can I qualify for H-1B sponsorship with a three-year bachelor's degree?
USCIS evaluates foreign degrees on a case-by-case basis. A three-year bachelor's degree from Australia, India, or the UK is often accepted when combined with relevant work experience, particularly if a credential evaluation confirms it's equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree in a qualifying field. Including a formal evaluation from a recognized credential assessment organization strengthens the petition.
How competitive is H-1B approval for IT Operations Manager petitions?
Approval rates for IT management roles are generally solid, but USCIS has issued RFEs in cases where the role appears more operational or supervisory in nature without strong technical requirements. Petitions that clearly establish a specific degree requirement and demonstrate that the role involves applying theoretical and practical knowledge in information technology are approved at higher rates.
Where can I find IT Operations Manager jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles that include visa sponsorship, so you're not sorting through postings that won't support H-1B or other work visa categories. IT Operations Manager roles appear across enterprise tech, healthcare systems, financial services, and large-scale managed service providers, all of which regularly sponsor. Browse current openings on Migrate Mate to find employers already set up to file.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored IT Operations Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
