Highlight specialized packaging software expertise
Emphasize proficiency in CAPE, ArtiosCAD, or Esko software. These specialized tools demonstrate the technical complexity that distinguishes packaging engineering from general manufacturing roles.
Document sustainability and compliance knowledge
Showcase expertise in FDA regulations, ISTA testing standards, or sustainable packaging design. Regulatory compliance requirements strengthen the specialty occupation argument for H-1B petitions.
Quantify packaging optimization achievements
Present specific metrics like material cost reductions, package size optimizations, or damage rate improvements. Measurable engineering outcomes demonstrate the specialized nature of your contributions.
Target companies with complex packaging needs
Focus on pharmaceutical, electronics, or food companies requiring specialized protective packaging. These industries have clear business needs for packaging engineering expertise and regulatory compliance.
Leverage materials science background
If your degree is in materials science or chemical engineering, emphasize the connection to packaging material properties, barrier technologies, and compatibility testing requirements.
Consider packaging equipment manufacturers
Companies like Bosch Packaging, Sealed Air, or Krones often sponsor visas for packaging engineers who design automated systems and provide technical customer support.

Find Packaging Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does packaging engineering qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
Yes, packaging engineering typically qualifies when it requires specialized knowledge of materials science, automated packaging systems, or regulatory compliance. The role must require a bachelor's degree in packaging, mechanical, or materials engineering to meet H-1B specialty occupation standards.
What degree requirements do employers typically specify for packaging engineer H-1B petitions?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in packaging engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or chemical engineering. Some positions accept industrial engineering degrees with packaging-specific coursework or experience in food science with packaging focus.
Which industries are most likely to sponsor packaging engineers?
Pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, food and beverage companies, and packaging equipment manufacturers frequently sponsor H-1B visas. These industries have regulatory requirements and technical complexity that justify the need for specialized packaging engineering expertise.
Can packaging engineers qualify for EB-2 green cards?
Yes, packaging engineers can qualify for EB-2 through PERM labor certification if the role requires a master's degree or bachelor's plus five years of experience. Positions involving sustainable packaging innovation or regulatory compliance design may also qualify for EB-2 NIW.
How do packaging engineers demonstrate specialized knowledge for visa petitions?
Document expertise in specialized areas like barrier film technology, ISTA testing protocols, FDA packaging regulations, or automated packaging line design. Certifications from the Institute of Packaging Professionals or experience with industry-specific software like ArtiosCAD strengthen visa applications.
How to find Packaging Engineer jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Packaging Engineer jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on manufacturing companies, consumer goods firms, and packaging technology companies that commonly sponsor H-1B, TN, and other work visas. These employers actively seek packaging engineers for product development, sustainability initiatives, and production optimization roles.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Packaging Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
