How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Pediatric Physician Assistant
Target hospital systems over private practices
Large hospital networks like Children's Healthcare of Atlanta or Boston Children's Hospital have established visa sponsorship processes, while smaller pediatric practices often lack the resources for H-1B petitions.
Emphasize critical shortage areas
Rural hospitals and underserved communities face pediatric PA shortages, making them more willing to sponsor international candidates who can help fill these gaps in care.
Consider academic medical centers
University-affiliated children's hospitals frequently sponsor international healthcare workers and may offer additional pathways like J-1 research visas for PAs interested in pediatric research roles.
Highlight NCCPA certification eligibility
Employers want assurance you can obtain NCCPA certification quickly. International graduates should research state licensing requirements and certification pathways before applying to sponsored positions.
Network through pediatric professional associations
Join the American Academy of Physician Assistants Pediatric Special Interest Group and attend conferences to connect with potential sponsors who understand international hiring challenges.
Research state-specific licensing requirements
Some states have streamlined licensing for international PAs while others require additional steps. Target employers in states where your credentials transfer more easily.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do pediatric physician assistants qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, pediatric PAs qualify for H-1B visas as the role requires specialized healthcare knowledge and typically a master's degree from an accredited PA program. The position meets specialty occupation requirements under immigration law, though finding willing sponsors can be challenging.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a pediatric PA?
You need a master's degree from a PA program accredited by ARC-PA or equivalent. The degree must be in physician assistant studies or a closely related healthcare field. Additional pediatric certifications strengthen your case but aren't required for visa eligibility.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor pediatric PAs?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and federally qualified health centers are most likely to sponsor. Children's hospitals specifically often have experience with international hiring. Small private pediatric practices rarely sponsor due to costs and administrative burden.
Can I get permanent residence through pediatric PA work?
Yes, through EB-2 or EB-3 green card categories. Pediatric PAs working in underserved areas may qualify for National Interest Waiver (NIW), which bypasses labor certification requirements and can significantly speed up the green card process.
What's the approval rate for H-1B petitions in healthcare?
Healthcare occupations generally see H-1B approval rates above 85%, higher than many other fields. Pediatric PA petitions are typically strong because the role clearly requires specialized medical training and addresses documented healthcare workforce shortages.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Pediatric Physician Assistant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
