Target large healthcare systems over small practices
Major hospital networks like Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Kaiser Permanente have established H-1B processes. They're more likely to sponsor than small surgical centers with limited immigration experience.
Emphasize your specialized certification credentials
Highlight NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or NCCT Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) credentials. These demonstrate the specialized training that supports H-1B specialty occupation requirements.
Focus on complex specialty surgical areas
Positions in cardiovascular, neurosurgery, or orthopedic surgery require more specialized knowledge and training, making them stronger candidates for H-1B approval than general surgery roles.
Document your formal surgical technology education
Ensure your diploma from an accredited surgical technology program is properly evaluated for U.S. equivalency. Most programs are 1-2 years post-secondary and may need credential evaluation.
Research state licensing requirements early
Some states require surgical technologist licensing while others don't. Check requirements for your target location, as licensing can strengthen your specialty occupation case significantly.
Apply to teaching hospitals and academic medical centers
University-affiliated hospitals often sponsor more H-1B positions and may value your specialized training more highly than community hospitals with simpler surgical programs.

Find Surgical Technologist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do surgical technologists qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, when the position requires specialized surgical technology training and certification. You'll typically need completion of an accredited surgical technology program plus CST or TS-C certification. The role must demonstrate specialty occupation requirements through specific technical knowledge and formal education in surgical procedures.
What degree do I need as a surgical technologist for visa sponsorship?
Most surgical technologist H-1B positions require completion of an accredited surgical technology certificate or associate degree program, plus certification from NBSTSA or NCCT. A bachelor's degree isn't always required, but formal postsecondary surgical technology education and certification are essential for specialty occupation classification.
Which employers sponsor surgical technologists for work visas?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and specialty surgical facilities are most likely to sponsor. Examples include Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and Kaiser Permanente. These employers have established H-1B processes and regularly hire international healthcare workers with specialized training.
How competitive is H-1B approval for surgical technologist positions?
Approval rates depend on how well the position demonstrates specialty occupation requirements. Roles in complex surgical specialties with formal education requirements have better chances than general surgical tech positions. Certification requirements and specialized training strengthen the case significantly.
Can I get an H-1B as a surgical technologist without a bachelor's degree?
Yes, if you have specialized surgical technology training and certification. Many successful cases involve associate degrees or certificates from accredited surgical technology programs plus CST/TS-C certification. The key is demonstrating that the role requires specialized knowledge obtained through formal postsecondary education in surgical technology.
How to find Surgical Technologist jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Surgical Technologist jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting healthcare professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on hospitals, surgical centers, and healthcare systems that commonly sponsor H-1B and EB-3 visas for medical support roles. These employers often have ongoing staffing needs and established visa sponsorship processes for qualified surgical technologists.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Surgical Technologist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
