Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Behavioral Health Tech Jobs
Target inpatient and residential facilities first
Hospitals and residential treatment centers sponsor work visas more reliably than outpatient clinics. Inpatient psychiatric units and substance use programs have higher staffing volumes, making them more experienced with H-1B and TN sponsorship processes.
Verify your credential equivalency early
If you completed your psychology or social services degree outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying. Employers and USCIS both need confirmation your degree meets U.S. specialty occupation standards for behavioral health roles.
Understand the specialty occupation threshold
Behavioral health tech roles can face H-1B scrutiny because some positions don't require a specific bachelor's degree field. Target employers who list a degree in psychology, counseling, or social work as a firm requirement, not just a preference.
Canadian and Mexican nationals have a faster path
TN visa classification under USMCA covers psychologists and counselors, which can apply to behavioral health roles depending on job duties. TN status can often be processed at the border without USCIS petition timelines, giving you a significant scheduling advantage.
Get certified before you apply
Certifications like CBHT or CNA strengthen your application for sponsorship by demonstrating specialized competency. Employers are more willing to invest in sponsorship costs for candidates who reduce their onboarding burden with recognized behavioral health credentials.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers
Not all behavioral health employers sponsor visas, and identifying which ones do through general job searches wastes significant time. Migrate Mate lists roles from employers with active sponsorship histories, so you can focus your applications on realistic opportunities.

Find Behavioral Health Tech JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can a behavioral health tech role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. H-1B eligibility requires the job to normally require a specific bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Behavioral health tech roles that require a degree in psychology, counseling, or social work qualify more cleanly than positions that accept any bachelor's degree. If the job description lists a specific field as required rather than preferred, the specialty occupation argument is much stronger.
Which visa types do behavioral health tech workers typically use?
H-1B is the most common path for behavioral health techs from countries without special treaty arrangements. Canadian and Mexican nationals can pursue TN status under the psychologist or counselor category depending on job duties, which avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. Some roles in nonprofit or government-affiliated mental health programs also qualify for cap-exempt H-1B sponsorship, bypassing the annual lottery.
Do behavioral health tech jobs require a bachelor's degree for sponsorship?
For H-1B sponsorship, a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field is required. Some employers accept associate's degrees or certifications combined with extensive experience, but those positions typically cannot support an H-1B petition. If you hold a three-year international degree, a credential evaluation establishing equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree is often sufficient for USCIS purposes.
How do I find behavioral health tech employers who actually sponsor visas?
Most job postings don't explicitly state whether a company sponsors visas, which makes general job searching inefficient. Migrate Mate filters behavioral health tech roles by sponsorship history, letting you see which hospitals, treatment centers, and mental health organizations have a track record of sponsoring candidates. This is significantly faster than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship during interviews.
Are nonprofit mental health organizations more likely to sponsor visas?
Nonprofit mental health organizations affiliated with universities or government-funded community health programs often qualify as H-1B cap-exempt employers. This means they can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the lottery, which is a major advantage. However, not all nonprofits meet the cap-exempt criteria, so you'll need to confirm the employer's status before assuming the lottery doesn't apply to your petition.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Behavioral Health Tech jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
