Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Ultrasound Tech Jobs
Target hospital systems over private clinics
Large hospital networks and academic medical centers file H-1B petitions far more often than independent imaging clinics. Filtering your search to health systems with 500-plus employees dramatically increases your odds of finding genuine sponsorship.
Get your ARDMS credential before applying
Most sponsoring employers require active ARDMS certification before they'll initiate visa paperwork. Completing your boards before job searching removes a common blocker and signals you're ready to start without added delays.
Canadians should explore the TN visa pathway
Canadian ultrasound techs qualify for TN status under the medical/allied health technologist category, which avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. TN approval happens at the port of entry, making timelines significantly shorter than H-1B processing.
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation standards
U.S. employers must show your role qualifies as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes. A bachelor's degree or associate's degree from an accredited sonography program typically satisfies this, but confirm with your employer's immigration attorney before applying.
Highlight specialized modality experience in your resume
Techs with vascular, cardiac, or OB-GYN sonography specializations attract more sponsoring employers than generalists. Listing your specific modalities and ARDMS specialty certifications prominently makes a meaningful difference in recruiter interest.
Browse Migrate Mate for sponsorship-verified postings
Migrate Mate filters ultrasound tech roles by employers with active visa sponsorship history, saving you hours of outreach to positions that won't support a petition. Use it as your primary source for sponsorship-ready opportunities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ultrasound techs get H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the employer must demonstrate the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a related field. Most accredited diagnostic medical sonography programs satisfy this, particularly when combined with ARDMS certification. Large hospital systems are the most reliable sponsors, as they have established immigration processes and file H-1B visa petitions regularly.
Does an associate's degree qualify for H-1B sponsorship as an ultrasound tech?
An associate's degree alone typically does not meet the H-1B specialty occupation standard, which generally requires a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. However, a combination of an associate's degree plus progressive work experience and ARDMS certification can sometimes satisfy the equivalency requirement. Your sponsoring employer's immigration attorney will assess this on a case-by-case basis.
How do I find ultrasound tech jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient way to find ultrasound tech roles with confirmed visa sponsorship. Most general job boards don't filter by sponsorship status, so you end up applying to positions where the employer has no intent or infrastructure to file a petition. Focusing on verified sponsorship listings upfront saves significant time.
What visa options exist for ultrasound techs who didn't win the H-1B lottery?
If you don't get selected in the H-1B lottery, Canadian citizens can pursue TN status under allied health technologist provisions with no lottery and no annual cap. Australian citizens may qualify for the E-3 visa if the role meets specialty occupation criteria. O-1 visa is theoretically possible but requires demonstrating extraordinary ability, which is a high bar for most sonographers.
Do ultrasound tech roles have high H-1B approval rates?
Approval rates for allied health roles like ultrasound tech are generally solid when the petition is well-supported, but USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation eligibility closely for positions that can be filled with an associate's degree. Petitions paired with a bachelor's-level sonography degree, active ARDMS certification, and a detailed support letter from the employer typically fare well.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Ultrasound Tech jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
