Target healthcare systems and sports medicine clinics
Hospitals and outpatient clinics frequently sponsor athletic trainers for H-1B visas, especially those with specialized sports medicine programs requiring certified professionals.
Emphasize BOC certification in applications
Board of Certification credentials demonstrate specialized knowledge that strengthens the specialty occupation argument for H-1B petitions and appeals to employers.
Consider university and college positions
Higher education institutions often sponsor athletic trainers and may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing, avoiding the annual lottery system entirely.
Highlight injury prevention and rehabilitation expertise
Employers value athletic trainers who can demonstrate specialized skills in biomechanics, therapeutic modalities, and evidence-based rehabilitation protocols for athletes.
Research state licensing requirements early
Most states require athletic trainer licensure. Check specific state requirements before applying, as some employers only sponsor candidates eligible for immediate licensure.

Find Athletic Trainer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do athletic trainers qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, athletic trainers qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in athletic training, kinesiology, or related field plus BOC certification. The role must demonstrate specialized knowledge in injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation that requires specific educational credentials.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as an athletic trainer?
You need a bachelor's degree in athletic training, kinesiology, exercise science, or closely related field. The degree must directly relate to athletic training duties. BOC certification is typically required and strengthens the specialty occupation case for visa approval.
How to find Athletic Trainer jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Athletic Trainer positions with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on sports medicine clinics, professional sports teams, universities, and healthcare facilities that commonly hire Athletic Trainers on H-1B or other work visas. These employers often sponsor qualified candidates due to high demand for specialized sports medicine expertise.
Which employers sponsor athletic trainers for work visas?
Healthcare systems, sports medicine clinics, professional sports teams, universities, and rehabilitation centers sponsor athletic trainers. University positions may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing, while private healthcare employers typically file under the annual cap.
Can I get H-1B sponsorship without BOC certification?
It's challenging but possible if you have equivalent international credentials and the employer can demonstrate why your specific qualifications are necessary. However, BOC certification significantly strengthens the petition and is preferred by most sponsoring employers in healthcare settings.
Do state licensing requirements affect visa sponsorship for athletic trainers?
Yes, most states require athletic trainer licensure, which can impact sponsorship timing. Some employers only sponsor candidates eligible for immediate state licensure, while others may sponsor during the licensing process. Research specific state requirements before applying to positions.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Athletic Trainer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
