How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Clinical Education Specialist
Target hospital systems and medical device companies first
Large hospital networks and device manufacturers like Medtronic, Abbott, and Stryker sponsor Clinical Education Specialists regularly. These employers have established immigration counsel and are familiar with the H-1B and TN petition process for clinical roles.
Confirm your degree field matches the job posting
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree and the role. A nursing, health education, or biomedical sciences degree strengthens your specialty occupation case significantly. A general business degree with clinical experience alone may not be sufficient.
Ask employers about H-1B cap-exempt pathways
Clinical education roles at nonprofit hospitals, academic medical centers, or university-affiliated health systems may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B petitions. This bypasses the annual lottery entirely and allows filing at any time of year.
Get your clinical credentials evaluated before applying
Foreign nursing or health science degrees often require a credential evaluation from an approved body before USCIS or an employer will accept them. Having this ready at the application stage signals preparedness and removes a common hiring barrier for sponsors.
Highlight training design experience, not just clinical hours
Sponsoring employers need evidence the role meets specialty occupation standards. Emphasizing curriculum development, competency assessments, and adult learning methodology in your resume reinforces that the position requires specialized degree-level knowledge, not just clinical floor experience.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Education Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Generally yes, when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in nursing, health sciences, education, or a directly related field. The key is whether the employer's job description mandates a specific degree, postings that say 'degree preferred' rather than 'required' can create complications at adjudication. Roles involving curriculum design, clinical competency programs, and staff credentialing tend to have the strongest specialty occupation cases.
Which visa types are most commonly used for Clinical Education Specialist sponsorship?
H-1B is the most common pathway for non-Canadian and non-Mexican nationals. Canadian and Mexican registered nurses or health educators can use the TN visa, which has no lottery and is far faster to obtain. Australians with a qualifying degree may be eligible for the E-3 visa. The right category depends on your nationality, degree field, and whether your employer is cap-exempt.
Do employers actually sponsor Clinical Education Specialists, or is this role hard to get sponsored for?
Sponsorship exists but is concentrated among larger healthcare organizations. Major hospital systems, medical device companies, and healthcare staffing firms with dedicated HR infrastructure are the most reliable sponsors. Smaller outpatient clinics or independent practices rarely have the resources to navigate the process. Browse Migrate Mate to identify which employers are actively sponsoring this role and filter by visa type.
Does my nursing license from another country count toward H-1B eligibility?
A foreign nursing license supports your qualifications but doesn't replace the degree requirement for H-1B specialty occupation purposes. You'll also likely need a U.S. state nursing license or be actively working toward one, depending on whether the role involves direct patient care oversight. Many employers require NCLEX passage or a comparable credential evaluation before extending a sponsored offer.
Can a Clinical Education Specialist change employers while on H-1B status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval, as long as your prior status was lawfully maintained. Your new employer must file before your current authorized stay expires. The new petition restarts the process, so confirm the new role also meets specialty occupation standards.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Clinical Education Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
