How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Prosthetist
Target rehabilitation hospitals and large medical centers
Major hospital systems like Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and Johns Hopkins regularly sponsor international prosthetists. These employers have established visa processes and understand specialty healthcare roles.
Highlight your board certification credentials
Certified prosthetists (CPO) from ABC demonstrate specialized expertise that strengthens H-1B petitions. Include your certification number and continuing education credits in applications to show professional standing.
Emphasize prosthetic device specialization
Employers value experience with specific technologies like microprocessor knees, myoelectric arms, or pediatric prosthetics. Detail your device expertise to differentiate from general orthotist candidates seeking sponsorship.
Consider prosthetic manufacturers and research facilities
Companies like Ottobock, Össur, and university research centers often sponsor prosthetists for R&D roles. These positions may offer EB-2 green card paths through advanced degree requirements.
Document patient outcome improvements you've achieved
USCIS favors petitions showing measurable impact. Quantify mobility improvements, patient satisfaction scores, or successful fittings to demonstrate your specialized contribution to patient care and rehabilitation outcomes.
Network through professional associations and conferences
American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists events connect you with hiring managers familiar with visa processes. Many prosthetist employers recruit internationally and understand sponsorship requirements for qualified candidates.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What degree do I need for prosthetist H-1B sponsorship?
You need a bachelor's degree in prosthetics, orthotics, biomedical engineering, or closely related field. Master's degrees in prosthetics from accredited programs strengthen your petition. USCIS also accepts equivalent combinations of education and experience, though degree-qualified candidates have higher approval rates for prosthetist positions.
Do prosthetists get approved for H-1B visas frequently?
Yes, prosthetist positions have strong H-1B approval rates because they clearly qualify as specialty occupations requiring specialized healthcare knowledge. The combination of degree requirements, professional certification needs, and patient care responsibilities makes these petitions relatively straightforward for USCIS adjudication compared to general business roles.
Can I get sponsorship without board certification?
Many employers prefer ABC certification, but it's not legally required for H-1B sponsorship. However, certified prosthetists have significantly better sponsorship prospects because certification demonstrates specialized expertise that strengthens petitions. Consider pursuing certification to improve your candidacy with potential sponsors.
Which employers typically sponsor prosthetists for visas?
Rehabilitation hospitals, major medical centers, VA medical facilities, and prosthetic device manufacturers most commonly sponsor prosthetists. Large healthcare systems like Kaiser Permanente, Cleveland Clinic, and university medical centers have established visa processes and regularly hire international prosthetists for specialized positions.
Can prosthetists qualify for EB-2 green cards?
Yes, prosthetists with master's degrees can qualify for EB-2 green cards, potentially faster than the EB-3 category for bachelor's degree holders. Advanced degree prosthetists working in research, developing new prosthetic technologies, or treating complex cases may also qualify for EB-2 National Interest Waiver petitions.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Prosthetist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
