Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Clinical Therapist Jobs
Target community mental health centers first
Federally qualified health centers and nonprofit mental health agencies are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file year-round without entering the lottery. This dramatically shortens your path to authorized work.
Secure licensure before your visa interview
Most states require a Licensed Professional Counselor or LCSW credential tied to your specific degree. Employers will often sponsor conditionally, but having your license in hand makes the petition significantly stronger and faster to approve.
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation standards
Clinical therapy roles require a master's or doctoral degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a directly related field. A general bachelor's degree alone will not satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements for this role.
Understand the H-1B lottery timing before you accept an offer
Registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you miss the cycle, cap-subject employers cannot hire you until the following fiscal year. Confirm your employer's cap status before committing to an offer timeline.
Document supervised clinical hours thoroughly
Many state licensure boards and USCIS both scrutinize supervised hours for therapists. Keep organized records of your supervision logs, supervisor credentials, and session documentation, gaps create delays in both licensure and visa petition approval.

Find Clinical Therapist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do clinical therapist roles commonly get H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. Clinical therapist positions qualify as specialty occupations because they require a master's degree in a specific field such as counseling, social work, or psychology. Hospitals, behavioral health networks, and nonprofit mental health agencies sponsor regularly. Many of these employers are cap-exempt, which means sponsorship is available year-round without depending on the H-1B lottery. You can browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate.
What visa options exist for clinical therapists beyond the H-1B?
The O-1A is available for therapists with published research, clinical leadership recognition, or speaking invitations at professional conferences. The J-1 exchange visitor visa suits postgraduate clinical training programs. For Australians, the E-3 is an underused option that bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. TN status covers psychologists for Canadian and Mexican nationals, though licensed counselors and social workers do not typically qualify under TN.
Does my foreign master's degree qualify for H-1B sponsorship as a clinical therapist?
It depends on the degree and the country. USCIS evaluates foreign credentials through a credential evaluation service such as NACES-member organizations. A three-year master's from Australia, the UK, or Canada is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. master's. However, a two-year undergraduate degree will not meet the requirement on its own. Your employer's immigration attorney will typically order the evaluation as part of the petition.
Is state licensure required for visa sponsorship, or can I work toward it after arriving?
Most employers will sponsor candidates who are license-eligible but not yet licensed, particularly for roles under clinical supervision. However, some states require full licensure before practicing independently, which affects the job title your employer can use in the petition. An unlicensed or provisionally licensed therapist may need a supervising clinician on staff, which not every employer can accommodate. Clarify this with your potential employer before the offer is finalized.
What approval rates look like for clinical therapist H-1B petitions?
USCIS approves the large majority of H-1B petitions for social workers and mental health counselors, with denial rates considerably lower than for ambiguous technology or business roles. The specialty occupation standard is straightforward when the job requires a master's in a clinical field and the applicant holds that credential. Petitions are most often challenged when the degree field does not closely match the clinical specialization listed in the job description.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Clinical Therapist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
