How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Psychiatric Nurse
Target hospitals with psychiatric units
Large hospital systems like HCA Healthcare, Ascension, and Kaiser Permanente regularly sponsor psychiatric nurses. Their established legal teams handle visa paperwork efficiently compared to smaller facilities.
Emphasize specialized certifications
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner credentials strengthen your sponsorship case by demonstrating specialized knowledge beyond general nursing practice.
Apply to underserved areas
Rural hospitals and state psychiatric facilities often struggle to fill psychiatric nursing positions. They're more willing to sponsor international candidates due to chronic staffing shortages.
Leverage nursing shortage programs
Some states offer expedited visa processing or additional support for healthcare workers. Programs in Texas, Florida, and California specifically target nursing shortages in psychiatric care.
Consider contract positions first
Travel nursing agencies sometimes sponsor H-1B visas for psychiatric nurses willing to work multiple contracts. This can lead to permanent sponsorship opportunities with host facilities.
Highlight bilingual capabilities
Psychiatric nursing requires strong communication skills. Bilingual nurses are especially valuable in diverse communities, making employers more willing to invest in visa sponsorship for qualified candidates.

Do psychiatric nurses qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, psychiatric nurses qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty healthcare professionals. You need a BSN degree, relevant psychiatric nursing experience or certification, and a job offer from a sponsoring employer. The role must require specialized psychiatric nursing knowledge beyond general nursing practice.
What degree requirements apply for psychiatric nurse visa sponsorship?
Most employers require a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) for H-1B sponsorship. Some accept an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) plus significant psychiatric experience, but BSN is preferred. Additional psychiatric certifications like PMHN strengthen your application significantly.
Which employers sponsor psychiatric nurses for work visas?
Large hospital systems, state psychiatric facilities, Veterans Affairs medical centers, and academic medical centers commonly sponsor psychiatric nurses. Private psychiatric hospitals and behavioral health organizations also sponsor, especially in high-demand markets with nursing shortages.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for psychiatric nurses?
Psychiatric nurses have better H-1B odds than many fields due to healthcare worker shortages. Specialized psychiatric skills, certifications, and willingness to work in underserved areas significantly improve sponsorship chances. Rural and state facilities are particularly receptive to international candidates.
Can psychiatric nurses apply for green cards through employment?
Yes, psychiatric nurses can pursue EB-2 or EB-3 green cards. EB-2 requires advanced practice credentials like PMHNP certification. EB-3 applies to BSN-level psychiatric nurses. Some positions may qualify for National Interest Waiver if serving underserved populations.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Psychiatric Nurse jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
