How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Triage Nurse
Get your NCLEX-RN cleared before applying
U.S. employers won't sponsor a triage nurse who hasn't passed the NCLEX-RN. Start the licensure process early, many states allow internationally educated nurses to apply before arriving, which removes a major hiring barrier upfront.
Target hospital systems over staffing agencies
Large hospital networks like HCA Healthcare and Tenet Health have established immigration programs and legal teams that process sponsorship regularly. Staffing agencies often lack the infrastructure to support H-1B or EB-3 petitions for nurses long-term.
Understand the EB-3 pathway for nurses
Many triage nurses pursue permanent residency through the EB-3 visa category, which includes a Schedule A designation for nurses. This bypasses the PERM labor market test and significantly accelerates the green card process compared to other employment-based categories.
Credential evaluation is non-negotiable
If you trained outside the U.S., a credentials evaluation from a CGFNS-approved body is required before most state nursing boards will issue licensure. Start this process months before your job search, delays here stall everything that follows.
Highlight triage-specific clinical experience clearly
Employers sponsoring for triage roles want documented experience in emergency assessment, patient prioritization, and high-volume clinical environments. Generic nursing experience on a resume reduces your appeal for sponsored positions that require immediate clinical contribution.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can a triage nurse get H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, but nursing roles face additional scrutiny under H-1B because USCIS must confirm the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in nursing. Registered nursing generally meets this standard, but the employer must clearly document that the triage role requires a BSN or higher, not just an associate degree.
What visa do most internationally educated triage nurses use to work in the U.S.?
Most internationally educated triage nurses come through the EB-3 immigrant visa category using Schedule A, a pre-certified shortage occupation designation that covers registered nurses. This pathway skips the PERM labor certification step entirely, making it faster than standard EB-3 sponsorship. Some also enter on TN visas if they're Canadian or Mexican citizens.
Do I need a BSN or is an ADN enough for visa sponsorship as a triage nurse?
For H-1B sponsorship, a BSN is strongly preferred because the specialty occupation requirement is harder to satisfy with an associate degree in nursing. For EB-3 Schedule A, the degree requirement is more flexible, but individual state nursing boards and employers may still prefer or require a BSN for triage roles specifically. A credential evaluation will clarify equivalency if you trained internationally.
Where can I find triage nurse jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international nurses and other visa-requiring candidates, filtering job listings to show roles where employers are willing to sponsor. Searching there lets you focus on hospitals and health systems with active immigration programs rather than sifting through general job listings where sponsorship willingness is unclear.
How long does EB-3 sponsorship take for a triage nurse?
For nurses from most countries, EB-3 Schedule A processing takes roughly 18 to 36 months from employer filing to green card approval, depending on your country of birth and current USCIS and NVC backlogs. Nurses born in India or China face longer waits due to per-country limits. H-1B sponsorship for temporary status can be approved in as little as 3 to 6 months with premium processing.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Triage Nurse jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
