Primary Care Physician Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Primary Care Physician
Complete residency before H-1B applications
Most H-1B petitions require completed medical residency training. USCIS views residency as essential specialty occupation training, making fellowship completion or board certification strengthen your petition significantly.
Navigate J-1 waiver requirements carefully
Many physicians enter on J-1 visas with two-year home residency requirements. You'll need a waiver before H-1B sponsorship, typically through underserved area commitment or hardship cases.
Target healthcare systems and FQHCs
Federally Qualified Health Centers, hospital systems, and academic medical centers frequently sponsor physicians. These employers understand visa processes and often have dedicated immigration support teams.
Emphasize board certification and specialization
Board certification in family medicine, internal medicine, or other primary care specialties strengthens visa applications. Subspecialty training or additional certifications demonstrate extraordinary ability for O-1 cases.
Consider National Interest Waiver pathway
Physicians serving underserved populations or in critical shortage areas may qualify for EB-2 National Interest Waivers, bypassing labor certification requirements and expediting permanent residency applications.
Prepare for state licensing requirements
Each state has different medical licensing requirements. Factor licensing timelines into visa applications, as employers need confirmation of your ability to practice legally before sponsorship approval.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do primary care physicians qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, primary care physicians consistently qualify for H-1B sponsorship as the role requires specialized medical knowledge and completed residency training. USCIS approval rates for physician H-1B petitions are typically higher than average due to clear specialty occupation requirements and documented healthcare workforce shortages.
What degree requirements apply to physician visa applications?
You need a medical degree (MD, DO, or foreign equivalent) plus completed residency training in primary care specialties like family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics. Foreign medical graduates must pass USMLE exams and complete ECFMG certification before residency eligibility.
How do J-1 waiver requirements affect H-1B sponsorship?
If you completed residency or fellowship on J-1 status, you must obtain a waiver of the two-year home residency requirement before H-1B sponsorship. Common waiver paths include underserved area commitment, persecution claims, or hardship cases. The waiver process typically takes 6-18 months.
Can international medical graduates get visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the pathway requires ECFMG certification, USMLE passage, and successful residency match through NRMP. International medical graduates face additional scrutiny for credential evaluation, but completed U.S. residency training significantly strengthens visa applications and employer confidence.
What visa options exist beyond H-1B for physicians?
Primary care physicians can pursue O-1 visas based on extraordinary ability, EB-2 National Interest Waivers for underserved area service, or EB-1 for internationally recognized medical achievements. Academic physicians may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B positions at university hospitals.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Primary Care Physician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
